The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Should there be a difference in the output of my Finally DI if I’m just running out of the XLR out as opposed to using both the XLR and 1/4” out? Just using the DI is significantly louder. Not that I can’t just turn it up, just curious if that’s a normal thing.
It is fairly normal. The 1/4" output also presents a "load" to the preamp, so it's splitting the load between two outputs as opposed to having only one.

Thinking of getting a tube warmer, but it might be unnecessary. Using a shift line Olympic, but wondering if there is something else out there. Thinking of getting either a space heater or more pedal (or Edison) to add some extra warmth and girth. What's the experience around here with these pedals, whether I'll actually get something added beyond the slo, and whether I should be looking into the space heater or the more.

Thanks!

I got bored, so heres my cheesy sales pitch; Id take the More anyday.

Introducing the revolutionary More guitar pedal, designed to give you More. This exceptional pedal features not one, but two tubes to offer More warmth and richness. Experience the simplicity and effectiveness of the single More knob, which allows you to dial in the perfect amount of More to your playing, from a subtle touch of More to an overwhelming surge of More. Whether you're a beginner looking to add More to your sound or a professional seeking More, the More pedal is your ultimate solution. Don't settle for less when you can have More.

More.

You're making the more sound really good. I may need that.

More is nice, but subtle. It does what it does very well. It's always kleeeen. If you want ANY tube OD at all, then an Underground Accelerator (which is a Space Heater with a Fender passive tone stack) is my recommendation. It will do more than More, although it won't do the glassy kleeeen as well as more. IMHO the UA is much more versatile. If you want the warmth of an old school B series Ampeg, the Slampegg is another option, but has much lower output than the UA and SH (passive tone stacks decrease gain a bit). If you want multiple options ranging from clean tube warmth to heavy OD, maybe a Dream Catcher or Detective will float your boat even more betterer?. Remember, one piece of sushi has been known to lead to a whole roll......

Everyone here: Please just work on Furthermore, it's pretty much the only thing we want right now.

Me: WHAT IF I TOOK THESE FOUR PEDALS THAT ARE ALREADY FINE AND DID WEIRD THINGS TO THEM TO SEE IF IT'S BETTER???

Also me: Man, I can't seem to find time to work on Furthermore.

Just seeing this on sushiboxfx.com - terrific idea!

  • Greenhouse
GREENHOUSE IS STILL IN DEVELOPMENT STAGES AND IS NOT READY FOR RELEASE

The idea of Greenhouse is simple: you have a pedal that doesn’t have tubes, and you want it to sound like tubes. You can’t stick tubes inside the pedal (usually), so the best way to do it is to wrap the pedal in a tube sandwich. Greenhouse features a tube input stage, a send to your pedals output, return from your pedal’s output, optional blend with your original clean signal, and a tube output stage.

Update June 2022 – I have a working prototype for Greenhouse that I will get boxed up for thorough testing. I hope to have it ready for release by August 2022. Estimated price is $250.

Oh yeah, I've been cleaning up the workshop and Greenhouse and Firebox are formally in the "I still think this is a good idea worth pursuing" pile. I don't think I'll make it by August 2022, but it's still on the list.

Someone: So are they even better now?
Not sure yet, prototype circuit boards have been ordered but haven't arrived yet. The two most likely to end up going somewhere are "Finally E" (pending an A/B with current Finally) and "Yes Please" (pending me plugging it in and saying "neat").

@Sushi Box FX Are the custom orders going to be opening back up any time soon?
Man, I hope so. I thought I had the printer fixed, then when I went to test it I just got the same problem I was having before. I've ordered more parts to keep trying, but parts for a Chinese printer come from China so I'm still waiting. The tracking says they arrived in Chicago today, so hopefully I'll see them tomorrow. I may have time to swap them soon, but @TonyP- is coming to hang out with me and Venus X this weekend, so the printer may still have to wait.

I do have a couple enclosures I finished as "extras" a couple months ago that I was considering putting some HW builds in for fun, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. If I remember right it's a pair of Slampeggs in prismatic cosmos and a Finally in dirty magic. I think a HWDW in prismatic cosmos may be there as well.

On that note I also decided since I haven't been able to get a 100% problem-free SMD Lab Rat layout, I built HW Lab Rats into some stock enclosures I had on hand, so I have 4 or 5 HW Lab Rats that I could list for sale if I ever get around to doing so. This will probably be the last time I offer the Lab Rat, so they would be "Last Call!" and discounted.

I have a moderate pile of other completed but unused pedals I found while clearing out the workshop that I was considering selling as well, so we'll see what happens there.

Dear Mr. Sushi, hereby a friendly reminder that the secret society - not too long ago - declared the "Grand Slampegg" a top priority project (after Venus X). Tough for it to be truly Grand, a Lightning Boy equipped DI out is strongly recommended. For many simple souls such as myself, this grandiose device would be the grandest of all pedalboard preamp/DI solutions.
Kind regards, a fan and admirer. :smug:

I did the same earlier this year. I wanted a non-eq tube only unit to add some glass to the sound, and found a Sushi Westinghouse, which is their version of the Edison. I totally dig it. I've done tons of gig now and it really sounds good when I use it with my class d amp, or on ampless gigs (but I leave it home if I take a tube amp).

Sushi has a pretty strong presence on the current board

Wednesday morning no-context question with no counter-questions allowed:

In a theoretical 4-band EQ with switchable mids frequencies that is going in nothing in particular, is 250Hz/440Hz for lo-mids and 800Hz/1.2kHz for hi-mids a pretty good set of options?

Simple yes or no answers will suffice, I won't be expounding at all on the question.

Yes, to my knowledge.

I watched a deep dive of Trickfish's Minnow and those are fairly close to what they have, and it ends up being quite flexible. Trickfish's freq centers are a bit higher, but without context idk if that is significant or not. Tubes may be better at those freq center vs. trickfish's. So if your 4 band ends up behaving similarly, it should be a terrific and awesome thing.

Also of note: I'm just a guy who's watched too many eq videos, not a pro.

It all depends, how does it sound?
