The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

The MORE and The Detective are totally different. If you want a 2-channel preamp, one clean and one dirty channel, then you want The Detective. The MORE is just, what I would call, a super-saturator - it adds lots of tube juice to your sound. The MORE itself isn't a preamp; in my use cases I have found it most useful in the FX loop of a solid state amp, as a boost into another pedal, or as a boost post-preamp. If you just want a boost, I would suggest either the MORE or the Finally (or Space Heater if you want to build one yourself or can find a used one). If you want a full preamp, then go Detective.

You can also just get the Elementary and decide which way you want to go from there, too. I know I'm not being super helpful here, but I would just point out that the MORE isn't a preamp pedal, it's just a tube saturator/boost.

Hey thanks for the reply. I'm aware of the differences but I'm not sure it'll make much of a difference in how I generally use whichever pedal I pick up. I'll explain my use case.

I am playing a Jazz Bass into a RNDI (occasionally with compression). I love the sound of my JB clean, especially with the reinforcement (not sure what other word to use) that the RNDI gives the signal. It's full and has some nice harmonic quality to it.

Id like to add another subtle source of harmonics as an always on (or nearly so) pedal. The More seems perfect for this. I wouldn't use it as a boost necessarily, because it'll almost always just be on.

My other alternative is to go with The Detective. Listening to demos on YouTube of both circuits, I really like the sound of Elementary with little to no drive. I imagine that it sounds different than the more does, but if set subtlety I could achieve a similar addition of subtle warmth to my signal. The benefit of going with The Detective is that in addition to the 'clean' setting I would use with the Elementary, I can swap over to a much more driven and flexible signal from Dr Watson when I want to.

Basically I would use More or Elementary as a basic/subtle signal fattener, but if I get The Detective I have more flexibility. Without hearing More in a demo, it's hard to know how similar or different it sounds to Elementary dialed subtlety.

Hope that makes sense.

More is going to provide the bare minimum of harmonics and no tonal flexibility. It's not going to add much on its' own in a live context, and will be subtle even in a recording. Virtually any of the other sushi boxes can be selectively run anywhere from clean through varying degrees of harmonically enriched through frank OD. Even the single channel boxes like the UA will give you MUCH more (see what I did there) flexibility than More. I run my Dreamcatcher with the clean (same as UA) channel almost completely kleeeen, and the red channel very dirty. I wanted to do the same with the Detective on another, smaller board, but realized I don't have 5.7 inches of available real estate on it, so I went with a UA and a Guptech Bass Bone (for the dirt), which saved me a critical 1/2 inch.

Subtle shouldn't be an issue with the More, especially since so many people speak so highly of it. I'm definitely more of a "add many nice subtle layers as you can to build an overall tone" compared to using heavy EQ from the get go. I tend not to EQ bass too much before or during mixing, but having a good distribution of harmonics in the recorded signal will make cuts and shelving much easier.

Your description of your Dreamcatcher is what I would do with The Detective. How much more subtle is More than the cleanest setting on the UA channel?

Both options seem like they will work and I'm sure I'll like both, but I'm not sure what I will decide.

The UA (=cleaner channel of Dreamcatcher) can be run just as cleanly as More, and so can Elementary (= cleaner channel on the Detective), especially (but not necessarily) with a lower gain tube like a 12at7 or (even lower gain) 12au7. IIRC, More is basically the unaffected/ noncompressed buffered circuit from the (now discontinued) Deep Dish compressor. Even the "dirty" circuits of the 2 channel boxes can be run VERY cleanly if desired IME.

@PineappleOwl if you love the sound of your bass into an RNDI, as well you should, the MORE may just be the enhancer you desire. I have a client that insists on me using a passive bass into my RNDI but when I snuck in the MORE into my signal chain for one of several takes on a song he replied that he didn't know how but that track sounded much fuller and present in the overall mix. Now he wants all my tracks to include the MORE in the signal chain.

The RNDI was my main choice for several years after using a Countryman Type 85 for decades until I got my Finally with Jensen DI transformer from the first run, I still want to try the updated one with Unagi.

Yes, I came to the same conclusion and placed an order this morning for a new More.

Now I just need to decide if I should be bad and also pick up the used Detective that is for sale on this forum. Depending on how long it takes to receive a back-ordered More, it could be fun to test out and get used to The Detective. I imagine I wouldn't take much of a hit if I decide I only need the More.

Anyone have a rough estimate of how far out back ordering is at the moment?

There is a great use for a switchable channel dual preamp and The Detective would be a tasty addition. I have one of the original [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] that was modified and likely some of the inspiration for the Detective. It was used for a while with an original Rock band that went on hiatus as members are now long distance and I often use it for recording guitar, piccolo and pixie bass parts.

@Sushi Box FX will have the final word on the BO situation, a lot depends on his workload as well as having the parts and circuit boards on hand.

I don't have the Detective, but I do have a Dr. Wattson X and an Elementary. Just to help you along the way, though, they are my two most favorite flavors of Sushi. Give 'em a try :-)

I'm fresh out of enclosures, but I have everything else on hand. I'm expecting a shipment of enclosures in 1-2 weeks, at which point I'm planning to fill a bunch of backorders and restock units that are out.
