Years ago I would gig with a Demeter preamp setup, and a club that I played regularly had a sound guy that never let me use that nice Jensen DI. I used to plead with him, telling him how good that DI was, but he wasn't hearing it! He had his own DI boxes that he had been using for 20 years there and didn't trust anything else.

Some sound guys who are jerks will just take the bass completely out of the PA when they realize that the bass player is using a post eq DI.

Your giving me flashbacks, Jason!!

Ouch. So I guess most of you guys will be flipping it to Pre-EQ then? I wonder if there is any way to install an aftermarket switch to change between the two.
This is one of the diffs between the SA450 and the LMII. :)

I'm actually probably going to be doing this.

On the pre/post thing, I strongly prefer pre for DI out, and IMHO for a great reason... (note: assuming full PA)...

From stage, we have NO idea what FOH sounds like, so how in the heck could we possibly "eq for it"? The answer is, we can't. We tune our eq's to sound good on stage, because what our rig is, very simply and basically, is a stage monitor.

Give the production crew pure unadulterated bass sound, and let THEM blend, compress, and eq everything as needed. That's their job, and IMHO, trying to do anything to interfere with it only hurts the band's sound and the audience's experience.

IMHO, if you think you need to feed FOH post because you don't trust your production crew to eq FOH correctly, then I'd say that's a very different problem... you need a new production crew. Again, trying to eq FOH from stage is, IMHO, just crazy talk. :)

Obviously, I'm a hard core stickler about not interfering with FOH. I even set my rig up to fire across stage to help avoid that interference in smaller venues. The drummer can hear me better that way as well, which he (foolishly) likes. ;)

So why would I ever use post? Simple. If I wanna' drive a power amp with it, in which case I'd use an outboard DI like my Sansamp Para Driver to feed FOH.

With that jumper arrangement it should be easy. I'd just turn the amp off when making the change (after the mod), just in case.
You shouldn't need to turn the amp off, because this is a parallel connection in either case. However, it probably would be a VERY good idea to NOT do this while connected to the board... at least without turning your channel down first anyway.

Hmm....should I go poking around in my amp today? Mighty tempting.

Question:

My LMKII was picking up radio signals through a PA, and then making a loud hum through a different PA without being on. The amp absolutely kills through my cabs with no hum whatsoever.

Any helpful hints or at least some words of encouragement?

Something VERY strange is happening, and I doubt it's the head... any chance they have phantom power turn on? I don't know if that could cause it or not, but something to check anyway.

Did lifting ground make any difference?

I always carry a DI with me just in case for stuff just like this. Sometimes in-house PA needs maintenance and doesn't get it. :)

Thanks vic
I have no real idea what the difference is and am no good with electronics but if it is an easy thing to do i would be willing to give it a go.
The switch you posted would work, but it's got a second set of contacts (double pole vs single pole) that you simply don't need, so it's also larger than you need. FWIW, anyway.

To do this "right" tho, you probably need a wire-wrap tool and solid core wire, because you need those wires tight so they won't come lose or touch each other. I'd STRONGLY recommend against soldering to the berg pins. Otherwise, there might be single contact berg jumpers which would also work, but I haven't looked. I have a wire wrap tool, so if I do this, I'll probably just use that.

Vic,

I think you just need to start up a thread with as many diagrams and steps as you can possibly muster to do this, and save us the confusion of words like wire-wrap and berg pins :D

Sorry. Obviously, I'm too much of an electronics nerd. I used to do this kinda' thing for a living, so it's all too easy for me to go there. :)

I'm not sure if they had phantom power on, but it's possible. Lifting ground made no difference.

I used a DI as well after the hum incidents--I always have one just in case.

That's one of the reasons I suggested turning the amp off before doing the switch... preferably also before you connect to anything external. It's not like you'd switch it often during a gig... and of course if you're already connected to the board that would be one more thing to keep in mind.

I haven't seen the jumper in real life but aren't there plugs that would fit on the three posts, similar to the speaker to motherboard connector on a PC? This would negate the need for soldering.

Good point, and yeah, I bet you could find those and then just run the wires to a switch. Generally speaking those berg style pins are standard spaced, so it should fit. Nice catch.

I heard from Paul @ the NYC GC that Im in luck I should have the F1 in a couple of weeks At first I was told I wouldnt see one til late August or early Sept. Only to get a follow up call saying there was a F1 LE red in DC

So far nothing but good words for the staff at the NYC GC

Keep ya posted

Peace

Hey Mark, would you mind sharing the price on the F1?

I actually forgot to ask while checking out a LMII. Remembered it once I got home though. :o
