It's interesting that some have had soundpeople tell them the DI is too hot. Since the complaints here I now ask for opinions on mine and so far everyone seems to like it. Not one issue. Never had any before I read the complaints either. My onstage sound with the LMII/Nahas rig is great either way;)

Yeah, I'm a bit skeptical with this guy. I think it may have been hotter than what he was expecting b/c the other guys play passive basses into an ART tube DI.

He had no issues last time I played there. So I'll take it with a grain of salt.

If it's outside the norm of what he's used too...
:hmm:

I've only had local soundpeople complain that the DI on my old AMP amps were too hot. Never heard that from a serious pro soundperson. Not saying that some of the locals might not know what they're doing... or am I?
;)

I heard Brad play last night live and outside. What a stellar in the pocket cat. His solo was also respectful of the tune, just harmony!
Anyway he used that little Markbass head. I picked it up. It felt like a toy. Not quality wise just weight. He was playing through a 15 and a 12 locally custom made. What a sound. Every note clear, full, great highs with articulation.
I had no idea that the MB heads were so dynamic and toneful for days.
Brad's playing is the touch that makes this electricity, wires, paper, metal , wood, etc. happen.
One big bow.

Thanks, Harry, I really appreciate that, too kind as usual. Good to see you again. About that solo...

I'd love to hear playback on that just to see if it's kinder than my recollection:D. At least I didn't slap during it.

On my way to DC for my Monday night hit.

i might have missed the answer to this somewhere on all these pages, but without a pre-amp out on the LMII is there still a way to use it as a pre to a separate power amp?

if so, has anyone done that...i'd be curious to know if these sound even better with lead sled headroom.

thx,

bk
Sort of...

If you leave the DI out set to post, you can use it as a preamp, but while I found it's gain to be enough to drive a power amp, it wasn't enough to drive it well. It's only 10Vp-p. The MB heads with the adjustable DIs go up to 25Vp-p, and those should work fine.

I think the one guy with the issue is used to his controlled environment, while the other is an old pro used to making it happen on the road night after night. So maybe a little truth to the comfort zone. I'm not making any snap judgements based on this.

I did an outdoor festival type gig today and let the other bassists use my rig for the whole day. It was the only rig used. I ran the LMII into my Nahas cabs and ran the XLR out direct to the board. Because of all the talk here about the quality of the DI I asked the soundman specifically what he thought about the quality of the signal he was getting when I did the soundcheck. According to him it sounded very good and was easy to work with.

I ran the amp's EQ flat all day, the filters stayed off, everyone who used it commented on how good it sounded onstage and through FOH. The other bassists plugged in and played. Everyone had at least five strings, I ran a couple of sixes (Brubaker), Preach used his Brubaker five, a couple of guys used Smith fives, one had a Tobias five.

Again, everyone was more than happy with FOH sound. Of course I was the only one who had read this thread;)

Today, I asked my Nana if she thought I was handsome and she said, "yes" so that must be true, too.

Take matters into your own hands and do an A/B test in a controlled environment then tell me what you hear.

I'd rather debate about 1st hand experience than anecdotals of my soundman said vs your soundman said. That just muddies the waters.

You know there was nothing wrong with the DI on my LMII. I ran both cabs, the LMII and the DI at church this weekend. We put an SM57 in front of one UL-112.

This rig was awesome. I had compliments on my tone from both the sound guy and people who play bass. And i glanced at the board, the DI was being used the mic wasn't.

Those who say the LMII DI is unusable are crazy.

No one said that they're unusable, that's your individual call. I said that your full signal isn't getting through, there's a distinct bass roll off and some impedance mojo happening. Throw on the headphones and tell me what you think.

Then let the debate begin... my account included firsthand experience... unless you think I stayed onstage while everyone else played.
:bassist:

Maybe your Nana should've gone over reading for content instead of just flattering you.
:D

"I", meaning me, myself, went out front and heard "my" meaning "my" Markbass LMII's DI through FOH. Here's how it works for me... if it sounds good, it is good.

BTW I think you're purty too.
:smug:

I understood the story. I just missed the part where you mentioned that you, "compared it to ___________"

Explain the need for this comparison?

This may sound crazy but in my world I don't have to compare something to something else to know whether or not it's doing exactly what I want it to. I heard firsthand several bassists though a rig I'm very familiar with onstage, through FOH driven by the LMII DI. The low B's sounded excellent out front with no major tweaking. So did the rest of the frequency range. Excellent punch too. Many people commented after my set that the sound quality was like an excellent recording, something they felt was a compliment.

That in my opinion is not a bad place to be. YMMV.
