maybe its a generation gap but tool was never metal to me. rock band.
metal belongs on a whole 'nother plane of music.
I'd say I like Paul's tone more, I never heard a bass sound that good, That raw. A couple of people and a friend of me and Zongeeks has described it as "crunch". The songs that best show it are...

I like Justin's stage presence(Since I've never seen Paul play, or many people have either for that matter) he just stands there yes, But he plays furiosly. When they play "Sweat" live, Hes just nailing the low D during the chorus. it made me cringe, I was just think "when is that string gonna give out? when?" I think Aenema owns all, Lateralus was good, but I liked the sound of Aenema better, I beleive Lateralus was recorded digitally and Aenema was Analog, I really dont know the technical difference, but one sounds better to me than the other.

High on Fire is metal, The Red Chord is metal, Pantera is metal. Even a total fanboy could see that Tool doesn't hold a candle to any of these bands in terms of heaviness.

I think Metal is a rather broad statement these days. When I think of metal, obviously Metallica comes to mind. I'm not a big Pantera listener, but I thought they were more like thrash.

IMHO tool is my favorite group of musicians ever and lateralus is one of the most classic albums ever. i think each album gets progressively better.
i don't think you could classify any of their albums punk, and if were going to classify them as metal, only their first two albums.
IMO anything that goes through 3 different time signature changes in one song and is filled with polyrhythms and goes from melodic and beautiful to balls out thrashing(such as the end of the grudge) you cant call metal. I just think there's too much dynamics and odd time sigs to call it metal. there's not a lot on lateralus you can bang your head to.
and i love justin's tone. I love how there not anal about writing music like other musicians. Many other bands have feuding guitarists and basists who have an understanding of "you stay in your frequency range , i'll stay in mine." Justin and adam are not afraid to cross into each others range. and i love that. Its ignorant to limit yourself as a musician and not try new things with your instrument.
and then there's danny carey. if havent found an appreciation for this drummer yet, you really need to listen to lateralus from beginning to end and just focus on the drums. the dynamics are incredible. I never really noticed his drumming until i really disected the album. It gives me chills listening to it to this day. Those fills toward the end of the grudge are just crazy. how anyone can hit their toms at that speed and still manage to hit every freaking crash and splash on a 40 + peice drum kit is beyond me. also when he's doin things in one time signature with his hands and something different with his feet.... i cant even understand it
and people can talk trash about maynard all day but, he's a great lyricist/ and vocalist. i understand how annoying it can be to see so many fans who love tool only because of maynard. I think a lot of people don't give Tool a chance because Tool has some very ******** fans. But to hear maynard hold a note at the top of his lungs for 24 seconds is insane. and then to see him do it live for 30 seconds well thats even better. and his lyrics have changed my life.

I like Tool alot and beleive they are really creative, but as far as skills go I dont think Justin and Adam are that great a players. most Tool songs are easy to play and easy to come up with. The only songs I find difficult are Ticks And Leeches and Parabola. As far as tone goes, I believe Pauls is the best, Thats straight up Rickenbacker for ya.

I always liked early Tool better. I don't know if its just coincidental that they changed bass players around the time they started putting out the deeper topics and more complex songs (Aenima) but they just seemed to have a better edge to them. Don't get me wrong, I love every song Tool has written, and I've seen them live twice (with Justin), but if "old" Tool and the current incarnation were separate bands playing shows on the same night, I'd go see the old Tool.

If you were reffering to electric guitar, then I could see your point Adam Jones has some strange "fingernails on the chalkboard" sounds from time to time! Especially in "Stinkfist"

I've never seen his live playing up close, but it sounds like he hits the strings diagonally during the "heavy" parts. And a pick scrape that is on purpose and very seldom is cool, but he does it all the time... and on recordings... I'm surprised.
i agree the with you about justin and adam neither being incredible players, but i do think they're writing is great. i love the way they take a few notes and make 14 variations of one basic riff and go in so many directions with it until it has become this awesome song.

I agree with Matt on this one, there are some strange and unpleasing sounds coming from Justins bass in alot of parts. Sometimes it sounds alright, add's to the song in a certain way, other times I would urge him to change to finger style, I'm a finger player most of the time, and I can play most of justin's riff's pretty well and make them sound pretty good, minus the annoying scraping sound.
I dig picks on a bass a lot actually. It has so much rhythmic potential, and it sounds great, but you need the tone to back it up/work with it.

If you bash Tool (or really any band for that matter) and haven't seem them live, then you are automatically disqualified. Not saying you can't LIKE them, but saying they aren't "good" or "technically skilled" is complete bull****. Their live performances are PERFECT. I've seen them twice, and each ties the other as the best live show ever. Nothing even comes close. You can hear every note live that you can on the album and it's right. The mix, the volumes, the tones, it's just perfect. I've never seen a better live band. You'd also be amazed at just how little Adam does in the songs. Most of the stuff I thought was him is actually Justin, and you see that live. Pretty much everything you might think is "cool" and sounds like guitar, is actually Justin on his whammy and/or other effects. Impeccable music and an enormous and badassed set, plus the loudest PA possibly ever... one that'd make that sissy boy Entwistle run home to his momma!
