The Top Ten Things I Learned From Talkbass

TRUE bassists only play fingerstyle and NEVER with a pick.
REAL basses don't have fingerguards, but DO have pickguards. ...preferably tort ones.

Jaco only needed 4 strings therefore any bass with more or less than that many is not a real bass.
Jaco didn't need no pick. Because he is Jaco.
Jaco didn't need no mental stability. Because he is Jaco.
Jaco didn't need no house. Because he is Jaco.
Jaco didn't need no P-bass. Because he is Jaco.
Jaco removed his frets AND his pickguard, but is the only exception to the pickguard rule because he is Jaco.

The answer to every question about how much something is worth is, "Its worth exactly what you're willing to pay for it."

The answer to every question about what amp/bass sounds better is, "whatever sounds better to you."

The answer to every question about what to play over a certain phrase/chord progression is, "whatever sounds good to you"

The answer to the every question about tubes or solid state is, "for some people yes, for others no."

The answer to every question about what bass should I get is, "a P-bass"

The answer to every question about which P-bass should I get is, "G&L LB-100" (ok, that last one is mostly because of my responses.)

Yes, I too have become enlightened by TB
My top several:
Its all in the hands
Tort and clay dots are better than MOTS anything
A player sounds like themself no matter what amp and instrument they use
Tooooooooobs!!!!
Tone woods make a difference. Or not.
Cables and power cords make a difference. Or not.
How you sound to yourself when you practice doesn't matter, it only matters how you sound live. Or not.
New technology is always inferior until it isn't anymore.
Modern and vintage sounds are different, and they can 't be measured.
Punch and grind are different, and they can't be measured either.

In summary, the extreme majority of people on this site are caring, honest and respectful human beings. Really. Or not

Going to attempt to answer this seriously. Not sure if this is my "top 10", but it is the "first 10 to come to mind"...
  • Rubber stands will destroy a nitro finish.
  • Guns aren't always bad.
  • Deoxit can perform electronic miracles.
  • Strings are an entirely personal thing.
  • Flatwounds are a fad, they're not better than roundwounds, and will never be.
  • Warwick resale value is horrible.
  • Changes in forum format really are for the better and I just hate change.
  • I get a lot more accomplished when I'm not hanging around Talkbass.
  • Mike N is the guy to go for car trouble.
  • The vast majority of bass players are awesome, loving, intelligent people with a great sense of humor.

The last one I would like to believe is true of all musicians... and by musicians I mean bass players... especially those reading this thread... unless you disagree, which would result in a relentless attack on your lack of character, awesomeness, and most likely any remote possibility of a sense of humor :D

Carry on then

10. If that had another string I'd be all over it!

9. if that had one less string...

8. Bump

7. Your not gonna mix those cabinets are you?

6. Gotta have that headroom, baby

5. The common sense case for a cheap offshore bass

4. Jaco only needed four strings

3. Sooner or later - we will all play fearful cabs and rip a whole in the space/time continuum

2. Flats = fat, we need tort reform, and carrots are rife w essential nutrients

1. God's arms are too short to box w Lemmy! (RIP)

Happy New Year!
