the TRACE ELLIOT thread

Three things:

1. This is a great thread about the (former and maybe future) greatest bass amp company. Thanks everyone!!!!

2. I recently got one of British Audio Service's Trace V300H nos amps. I recommend you get yours before they are all gone. Good price, amazing tone, legendary pre-amp. This is a world-class, truly "pro" amp (my other amp is a V6). And unlike the V6, you can easily lift this thing! I have no affiliation with BAS.

3. I'm disappointed that the "new" TE speaker bins have no 12s or neodymium. Sorry, Trace, but I'm not lugging ceramic speaker magnets anymore. I expect Trace to be forward thinking, not re-active. I know they're re-establishing themselves in the market, but please, think ahead!!!

Really? I did not know this. Hmm... so TE did make something good during the "Gibson Era", eh?

Pretty much everything they made in the Gibson era was good.

I already posted this in another thread, but it ought to go here too...

With the experience that we all gained in R&D over the years, the last designed products, examples being: V4 & V8 valve Bass amps, re-designed Trace Acoustic Amps, Speedtwin Guitar range and the Evolite PA systems, were without a doubt Trace’s best ever products. These were supremely reliable and incredibly well engineered. There was over £500, 000 on back-order when Gibson pulled the plug!

Oh my. The V6 is here. It blew my mind. Loudest amp I've ever heard. It passed the threshold I thought I'd reached with my Mesa 400+ at 10 o'clock on the Volume and noon on the gain (going through two 15"s). It had plenty of room to spare.

The biggest difference from the 400+ was TONE. FOR DAYS AND DAYS. While I like the tone of the 400+, the V6 is just in another world. I've never heard a tube amp with such a fast response and clean tone. It was still warm and tubey, yet it was crisp and fast at the same time (I know I'm ranting and this is extremely hard to describe to some if they've never played a valve TE amp). The AH350 I got turned me on to this sound, and now I've found the next step.

The only problem is a buzzing that appears the second I take it off standbye (even with the volume and everything at 0). The buzzing is constant no matter how I dial the amp. It's more prominent through my 410, however it is still present and noticable through my 15s. Bye the way, the 410 and 1x15 are both Trace AH series, and the other 15 is out of an Ashdown combo.

My next step is to take it to my practice space and put it through the ropes with my Schroeder 310212. That should either confirm or deny the buzzing as well as let me push the amp further (my speakers at home were pushed as far as they could go with nothing over 12 o'clock on the amp).

Anyways, there will be pictures to come, though you've already seen this amp as it used to belong to Jugghaid.

:D

I sent you a PM about the buzzing. check that all the tubes are seated right after shipping and check your polarity switch on the back too. That monster was dead quiet cranked up right before I shipped it so it's probably something simple that got knocked around in transit.

400 british tube watts is something else isn't it? ;)

This amp just has me giddy. I've tried amp after amp and every time they've gotten better. I don't know if I'll ever find something to top this one. My two main amps now are my V6 and my AI Focus (which I think will be more of a backup at this point). I'm not going get rid of any from my stable, because I do love them all. But out of the TE AH350, AI Focus/Focus SA/Clarus, Mesa Boogie D-180 (and 400+ I sold) and M-2000, Traynor YBA-3 and Monoblock II, and the Ampeg SVP-Pro/QSC PLX3400 that I have, the V6 takes the cake. It's big daddy. There's a few more amps on my list to try, but I doubt they will come close.

Oh yeah, and I've played through a vintage Ampeg SVT....nothing special compared to this amp.

IMO Trace all tube amps are in a class of their own. I love the old vintage SVTs too....different sound....but I've been through about 30 different heads over the last few years looking for "the one" (including every Ampeg, Glockenklang, EA, Genz Benz, Several Trace heads, Yorkville, Eden, SWR, GK. Sunn, Ashdown, Mesa, and several others I'm sure I'm forgetting.

I stopped looking after the Trace V6/V4. I'll never GAS for anyhing else. I do need to find a V8 though.

Good luck with your search. It doesn't seem like there are many V8s left for the taking. If you find one and feel like you need to unload your V4, shoot me an email :P
Even if I find a V8 I'm gonna keep the V4 for smaller gigs and as a backup.

Yeah, smaller gigs, like with only 2 cranked 1/2 stacks and 1 loud drummer. :D:D

Agreed. In the tube head department, Trace Elliot really does stand alone in my book. It's just a matter of whether you prefer the V4/V6/V8 series or the Valve series, as far as I am concerned.
