the TRACE ELLIOT thread

TE was bought by Gibson in 99 (i think) - could be as early as 97 tho! :hmm: I thought the date was somewhere in this thread...

Now, my problem.
I need help. ;)
My Trace still isn't fixed after having numerous checks by the techs. They keep finding dry joints they had missed.
They thought it was fixed, when I tried it out, infront of the tech it made a slight popping sound and started too feedback and some smoke came out - they fixed this and it turned out to be a really bad joint in the pre-gain stage.

I'm beginning to think.. screw having to wait a week just have a dry joint repaired - i can do this!
basically my problem is this: i get a really low output, but AMAZINGGGGGGGGGG tone.
it's barely loud enough to practise, and definatly not loud enough for a gig.

i'm going to have a look inside and see if I can spot more dry joints. however, my question is this: is there something else the techs have missed? is my power dead dead and just going to keep my output low?
i can have this "repaired" for free atm, so is there something i could ask the techs to look at specifically?
Luckily I won't be gigging till Sept... but I don't feel like waiting..

another thing ive noticed is that when the amp is muted, its louder that it used to be. is there a possible grounding problem when the amp is on and thats where im loosing volume?

anyone? :crying:

ok, late new-comer to this thread, but now you've got my ears pricked up.

I too am looking for rack ears, but for a GP12SMX pre with a model 4001 (I think) power amp attached.

Any info appreciated!

And here is a peak inside:

Interestingly, there are holes cut out for two more power tubes, and the manual states that except for the two additional power tubes, the Quatra and the Hexa are identical. If this is really true, then I've got some ideas brewing... :D

Oh, and I feel obligued to point out that I did nothing to clean that sucker up. I think that if I spent a little time with it, I could have that Quatra Valve looking showroom!

Oh, and of course, it sounds fantastic! :hyper:

Good night, Tom.

Hey, nice amp Tom ;) That is one clean amp BTW!

I noticed those "extra" holes as well. If you come up with how to make it into a "Hexa", let me know! :D

Nice score Tom! Any chance of a review?

I have only been able to play through for a very brief period, but I will try to get a review up when I can. It sounds much as I expected, with a great clean tone (clear, tonally complex, full, very tight & articulate), and not really much for overdrive, but that's what my V8 is for!!! :hyper:

It is really quite light (I'm guessing no more than 40 lbs). I look forward to A/B-ing it against my other toneful 200w tube head! ;)

Tom, you may want to look over the schematics. I seem to recall that the Hexa used larger transformers.

That is what I thought (and would have expected), but the schematic itself has a comment something like "Hexa Valve: circuit is identical, with the addition of two output tubes" or something like that. I don't have the schematic with me, but I'll get that quote nailed down when I get home.

Perhaps PBG will chime in... or you could check with Shane the next time you chat with him.

Good ideas. They are both great sources of information.
