the TRACE ELLIOT thread

sorry guys - I've just read everyones glowing comments on Trace... maybe its just my combo amp, either way the GP7 has no decent tone to it, I'm gonna hopefully be getting myself a Kustom RIG one day, that new "Groove Bass" 1200 watt setup they do - just the sound of my Kustom is nice and warm, whereas my trace... :hmm: :scowl:

I love Trace gear, and the trace tone. But personally I'm not a huge fan of Trace Elliot cabs. I find them to sound kinda flat. I hear a world of difference with better cabs. Not that they're badly made, I just don't like their sound. So, It might be the driver in your combo you don't like...Try an extension cab from a different brand, and see what you think.

It also depends on what your looking for in tone. Trace has a unique tone, if your trying to get it to sound like an ampeg you might not have much luck w/o some effects.

Heh.

Nice. I had a 'Kustom' rig once upon a time. I'd have traded it in an instant for a good Trace rig.

I think you just poked a hole in your credibility.

(not that the new 1200 isn't a nice amp, but it doesn't disqualify the past 30 years of Kustom history).

If you don't like it, get rid of it.

i have a quick question, i have two trace elliot 4x10s, and on the back there are two jack inputs, one labelled input the other link. From my amp head do i plug one cab into input and the other into link or do i plug both of them into input on both cabs?thanks

I just switched from Ampeg to a Trace GP12 Series 6 combo with 4 10's. Night and day going from the Ampeg to the Trace. GREAT tone and veru articulate. Actually the amp has more tonal possibilities than anything I have run across and probably more than I will ever use.

Thread ressurected...

V8 owners, please enlighten me on some the key features of your amp. Or anything you think could be improved on...as if thats possable.

I'm looking into getting a custom all tube head made based on the V8. I want to make sure I have all the best attributes of this amp included in mine. Thanks in advance guys. :D

Compressor is GREAT. Fattens the sound up heaps. The preamp sounds awesome. It's deep, it's growly, it's punchy, it can cut through two guitars in a rock setting, and it's still got an articulate top end. Construction is very nice. Mines got a bit of wear and tear unfortunantly, but it WASN'T made in a Gibson plant (I e-mailed Shane at British guys) :) The fuses for each pair of power tubes is a great feature, you can run the V8 right on two tubes. Simple, yet effective EQ. I would like a low mid sort of frequancy to help with growl and that area for punch, but I seem to get enough. The Schroeder should help too.

One thing I would like, is side handles. Carrying it around it easy using the top handles, but getting it on top of a tall cabinet is impossible using them.

Hope that helps!

Awesome, Thanks for the input.

The V8 has 1/2 power mode right? Can you run it on half-power without re-biasing?

I've decided that the V8 is a beast all it's own, and probably cannot be duplicated...even by the best.

I'm getting a custom tube head made for me from Matamp. But, It's going to take a little while for me to raise the loot. I'm still in the basic stages of specing it up. I don't think theres anyway they will build me a 400w head though. It'll probably be rated 120-140, but should be plenty loud. From what I understand that's equivilent to most 300w tube heads. I'm going with one of their standard models (GTOL 6550) with a few of my own added features. :hyper:

I will NEVER get rid of my V6. I think it's the best bass amp ever made (and that includes V8s).

Same here... the tone I get from the V6 rivals or exceeds anything I've played thru. Who needs the stinkin' overdrive and compressor on a V8, anyway... that's what effects are for!!! :spit:

... of course, this is coming from someone who (i) has never played thru a V8, and (ii) realizes how seldom one comes on the market, and (iii) could never afford one anyway. But other than that... no sour grapes...!
:D

Great Trace thread! I play through a Trace GP12XV (the old silver faced Quatravalve era pre) into an old green SWR Stereo 800 into an Eden 2-10XLT. I think the Trace and Eden go well together. I wouldn't call the Trace clinical, but it's not a colored pre like the V-type (Alembic-type) pre. The Eden provides the pleasing color in the low mids and the Trace gives that huge slam punch. I play an F BN5 and I love the tone of this rig. I have a V-Type pre as well and it's the warm round tone that I use with my passive Jazz.

Lately my rig was sounding flat and lifeless so I changed the 1 preamp tube (in the GP12) and this made all the difference. I don't think these are "starved plate" pre designs so the preamp tube really made a difference to my ears.

hey Tapp, I am curious to know what brand of tube you are now using in the GP12XV?
Also, what is a "starved plate" pre design?

I believe I put a JJ 12AX7 in there. I can't really give you a big technical explanation of "starved plate" like PBG could but it's when the tube is operating on a very low plate voltage. Many tube based effects pedals (ala Butler Tube Driver) are based on this topology. I think (don't quote me) that Eden and SWR heads are low voltage as well.

Are you referring to the Butler-designed Tube Driver made by Chandler and later on Tube Works? If so, I believe that at least the rack mount versions run the tube at full plate voltage.

Tom,

Christ almighty...I just checked out your gear list. Where do you keep all that stuff?? I would never leave the house if I had all that gear...lol :D  :(

Very impressive.

Let's just say that my basement music room is very, very crowded! Far more now than in the photos on my blog! :p

Too much gear, too little time with the wife and kids out of the house... ;)
