the TRACE ELLIOT thread

Trace Elliot Valve stuff totally wipes the floor with virtually everything... My V4 has been a different amp since I put those TungSol 6550s in, no problems whatsoever... With my matching Trace 810 (1084) its a heartbreaker. (and back breaker!) Everyone comments on how well its sounds almost irrespectave of bass. I think its sounds best with the Warwick although the Status w/new strings is damn good too... Hope to see more valve designs when Trace Elliot re-establish themselves a little more...

Those amps are beautiful. Kind of wish TE kept that finish on their tube amps. The Hexavalve has many of the same features of the VA400, except the VA400 has the direct tube input on the far left as well as a padded input for active basses. Otherwise, they are very similar.

The Hexavalve is identical to the VA350, the slightly smaller little brother to the VA400. The power sections between the two differ significantly.

I need to unregister my ebay account or something. It's killing me. I look at the total of how much I've spent in the last 90 days and it makes me want to cry.

GAS has me by the throat.

Yeah, so what I'm saying is I just bought that VA400 on ebay. I know I'll love it. I just need to pick up two extra shifts now just to pay for it.

Nice score! I was lookin' at that and thinking of bidding so as to see how it compares to my V6, but opted not to in the end... didn't you just pick up a V6, speaking of? If so, per the standard TalkBass bylaws, you are of course required to post a compare/contrast review of both amps as soon as they arrive... :D

No doubt. I've never seen the insides or heard a VA350 or Hexavalve, but the Hexavalve front section looks close to the VA400.

Congratulations on the purchase. I am sure you will love that amp.

You got problems bro...how bout you sell me that V6 you just bought. That ought to make you feel better :D

Seriously though, congratulations- again. Whos got it better than you?

The thing is, I've fallen in love with the TE tube sound. The V6 is incredible, but why not get a second TE tube amp since it doesn't seem like they will make them again. I don't feel guilty for spending my money on that.

I'm young and single and working my ass off for a few more weeks to pay for this won't kill me :P

Oh yeah, and you will have to pry my V6 (and soon to be VA400) from my cold dead hands. :ninja:

That's a tough question. To me it seems like dating trace stuff can be vague. Your best bet is to look at the serial number. The last two numbers *should* be the year it was made.

As far as where they were made or what company owned Trace, I am clueless.

I hear you! My first experience with the Trace tube sound was the Twin Valve Combo I bought from Steve Azola. I now have a V8 and a Quatra Valve, and I am even more convinced that the Trace Elliot tube gear is top of the heap, IMHO.

Later, Tom.

Hello all,

This is a great forum! For the last year or so I just checked out the "Luthiers" forum at TB because I'm building a 6string right now, but the amps forum is great!
I have a Trace VR350 from 1988 and it's a super amp. I use without a preamp, just use the instrument input. I do have one minor gripe (I am not complaining about the weight, big tube amps are heavy, period) during a outdoors gig, the fan sucked in a bit too much dust and sand than it could handle and it's been noisy ever since. Instead of a standard lowvoltage fan they used a harder to get ac fan, and I'm still searching for a replacement (maybe I'll leave it out altogether, I removed the topplate already and my amprack has about 5cm's of clearance above the amp).

The amp is broken, sometime ago it started arc'ing so I think the tubes are gone but I'm not sure. Does anybody have a schematic of this thing (or the poweramp section of the VA350)?

Regards,

Jarno.
