Agreed. In the tube head department, Trace Elliot really does stand alone in my book. It's just a matter of whether you prefer the V4/V6/V8 series or the Valve series, as far as I am concerned.

I agree. I had a Hexavalve and even though it was a fantastic amp, I still prefer the V-type all tube heads. Completely personal preference though.

I agree as well.

For the music I play my QuatraValve is the cat's meow. :bassist: You guys know how sweet they are. They are just a different taste of Trace Elliot tube goodness! :D

I still love the V series heads as well and hope to find a V6 or V8 myself someday. Like Jugghaid said, it is just a matter of preference.

I'm currently running EH 6550's and some cheap Chinese 12ax7's. They came with the amp and sound pretty good.

However, I swapped in some JJ's in the preamp section and it made my tone even sweeter. The difference is really noticeable when I play harmonics. They are now mmm, mmm good! It just makes my already nice tone more round and rich. When I do switch out my power tubes I plan on putting in some JJ KT88's. That might be awhile though as my tubes look to have plenty of life left and I'm real happy with my tone now. :D

Check this puppy out.

Trace Elliot VA400

Exceptional amp. Very rare. The cover's Trace Elliot used for this amp and others of this era, tend to oxidize, for lack of a better term, but the amp itself is amazing.

I own one of these (no, this is not my amp :scowl: ), but for the price this is going for  , I could make a killing if I sold mine. Which I'm not, at "this moment" :D. If this amp tops a $1,000.00, my gas attack will be huge!

I owned a V6 before this head, and really found the highs a little harsh, especially when slapping. Also did not respond that well to active basses. Could have been my amp, but who knows.

My VA400 just kills the V6 I had in tone :hiding: . Can go from clean to thick, warm, overdriven tone in a heartbeat. The preshape button on these amps are to die for. Punch and clarity are an understatement.

I exchanged the original tubes with Svetlana KT-88s and JJ Electronics preamps.

I am not sure if these came out before the Hexavalve or Quatravalve amps.

Sorry, but finding pics of the VA350 or VA400 heads are hard to come by. There used to be a couple of members that had the VA400's and maybe they can post up some good pics.

KL, thanks for those pix! Very cool indeed.

It's truly amazing how much great stuff TE has made over the years. It makes it easy to be a TE devotee. There's pretty much something for everyone. And you know that it's totally pro-quality (although I don't really know much about the later small quasi-pro Commando or Boxer stuff).

It was always about TONE! Let's hope they continue thinking like that.

Those amps are beautiful. Kind of wish TE kept that finish on their tube amps. The Hexavalve has many of the same features of the VA400, except the VA400 has the direct tube input on the far left as well as a padded input for active basses. Otherwise, they are very similar.

Thanks for the pics.
