Nice bass! Could you describe the tonal difference between this and a standard passive J bass w/ singles?

The Nord pre is pretty pure: set flat you really "don't hear it."
It doesn't have a ton of range like the Aguilar stuff does, but, it has plenty of useful range: you can't (IME) use lots of the Ag preamp without it being too much. It "sounds passive" to me, whereas the Ag/Sadowsky stuff sounds really active. Good, but, active.

The Big Singles are fairly much "pumped up J pickups."
Deeper, shiner, grindier, broader frequency response than your typical standard Fender J issue stuff. Same tonal family though.

Yup. That bass haunted me. It came up for sale nearly a dozen times, and I had always JUST spent all of my dough and couldn't get it. I played the original Geddy Vee at a GTG- it was the same bass except without a matching headstock. The really in-your-face attack of it threw me back. It was awesome. Nowadays I still want one (played a silver Valenti 5 this year that had similar specs as well that was also awesome), although I don't know how I'd deal without a sixth string.

Nah- I'm too old and tired to really care about any of that any more :)

It's funny because I'm really not a Jazz/P guy, and I've played a lot of Fenders, but I really dig the Valentis I've had the chance to play (I'm luckily in the New England area so I've tried a handful at the GTGs). Here's a really nice 4 I tried this year:
