Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. I have heard the "Big" series is fatter/deeper/bigger down low and shinier/extended up high. But grindier? I would have figured a single coil J would have more grind. Thanks though, good to keep in mind.

Two nights of workin' the CAOJ5.
It's alder, maple, Nord 70's J's, 70's spacing, Sadowsky pre laid out v/v/passive tone/treb-bass stacked.
Personally, I prefer a blend pot to the v/v setup...YMMV; I can change it down the road if need be.
It doesn't have the same "I own the mix and you'd best get out of my way" as the Sadowsky RV5; but I didn't expect it to being spec'd to more or less 70's J stuff, minus the ash body.
It's bright, snappy, clear and pretty aggressive. It's got DA XL 170 nickels on it, which I'm sure tame it some compared to stainless rounds, which is good, cause...ya know...it's pretty aggressive
I used an MB F1>LDS 4x8+horn last night, and I don't think the F1 is the best match for this Valenti in terms of adding mid-weight.
Tonight I used a Mesa M6>UL410, and that was much better as both of those elements add some heft.

This metallic orange valenti is simply amazing!!!
I don't remember where (it's probably here) i read that Mr. Valenti is using underwound Big singles. Is there a reason to go with underwound pickups?

i ab'd 2 of the same spec'd basses at carey's shop. the big singles were not grindier. they were deeper and more extended on top.

Depends which single coils you're talking about.
I specifically said "compared to standard issue Fender."
Compared to the 70's wind Nords in #100, nope, not grindier than those.
Some of that is going to depend on strings, setup and fretboard material as well.
I haven't heard Big Singles in a bass that didn't have a maple board and stainless strings; I think I noted that in the post you reference as well...

I've spent some nice time with #46, the LPB JJ5 in the middle now.
It's an alder body/pau ferro board; Sadowsky Singles and preamp with vtc.
You'll see #18 next on the right; ash body, maple neck, Nord Big Singles and Nord 3 band preamp.
Sadowsky RV5 on the right with alder body and morado f/b; HC pickups and Sadowsky preamp with vtc.
With regards to #46:
I was pretty surprised how different the Sadowsky SC's sound from the HC's. Definitely brighter and more aggressive. I was not surprised by the very impressive fit, finish and build quality. Nino's work is quality you can count on.
