I've been down here in "lower Alabama" all week doing HALO drops, and the only damn beers in any of the ****** bars I've been to are Miller Lite and Dirt Yuengling. So I'm feeling your pain.
Except for Florida, I get the distinct sense that the South is a wasteland for beer. It seems strange, given the climate, that there aren't some great pales and kolsches and IPAs down there.
I must be lucky. Within walking distance of my campus we have at least 2-3 good places to go.
The Front Page Deli (my bar of choice) carries Fat Tire, Blue Moon, Magic Hat, and a craft beer of the month, and they make fantastic sandwiches.
The Blackhorse Brewery/Pub/Restaurant has some of the best food in town, and they carry several craft beers on top of their micro brews, and I would recommend them to anyone that comes to middle TN.
I feel like I'm going to start brewing my own beer over the summer though. I want to see what that's all about. That way, when I go back to school in the fall, I can have a handful of batches of homebrew on tap. Now that would be a sweet set up.

Yeah-It's a weird deal....Bastard is brewed in Cal.,I live in Mn. & can't get it here,but I played a gig in Wis. & went to this small-town liquor store & there it was!! They only had 4bombers of Arrogant & 1 Double. Needless to say,the drummer & I scarfed them up & enjoyed them at the hotel....
Do they charge extra if it smells & tastes like bud? [I don't mean "Weiser"] But seriously,folks....I'm not familiar with Yuengling-If it comes in clear or green bottles,chances are the light got to it & made it skunky....
It sure will pass with food....In the morning-In the bathroom....
haha! Unfortunately I bought a 12 pack, which will take me a while to drink. Maybe I'll bring it to practice.
I'm going to try it again. I'm thinking the chips and salsa I was eating contributed to the ewwww factor.
I tried that Double Bastard Ale last night...didn't care for it at all. Way too over the top/assertive for my tastes and I am not a fan of bland beer. I think Stone is overrated in general. The only beer I personally really like of their is the RIS.
Have some tasty 21st Amendment Monk's Blood in the fridge chilling for later tonight.
Picked up New Belgium's Folly 12-pack, 3-each of Fat Tire, Mighty Arrow pale ale, 1554 black ale, and Ranger IPA. Nice stuff.
+1 to the southern Yeungling smelling/tasting like the herb. Don't know why but there is definitely a difference between Florida Yeungling and PA Yeungling.
I have only been to New Orleans in the south (south of Tennessee anyway) and I would have to agree. The beer selection was lacking. It was like the Blues brothers with " we got both kinds...country and western" only it was " Bud and Bud light":scowl:
I was up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula last fall birdhunting and we stopped in this nice restaurant in Baraga County, and they had on tap: Busch, Busch Light, MGD. I ordered a cocktail, then saw that they had a few cans of beer by the Keewenaw Brewing Co. in a fridge, so I drank that from then on. If a little place up in Baraga can have a couple of non BMC beers around, then it's ridiculous that a place in New Orleans can't.

There's a buddy of mine who worked for the Sam Adams brewery down in Cincy and he said that Sam Adams also bought an old brewery in Pennsylvania where they once brewed a larger known and distributed beer, can't recall the name though. Anyway, I guess that, since they use the same vats, the beer tastes different than the beer brewed at the Cincinnati brewery, in a bad way according to his opinion. My guess is that there are similar situations going on there as well.
