Yeah, back in the day it was a slugfest out there for the Latin Kings vs the Disciples (Latin?), Spanish Cobras and a bunch of other Folks. Are you on the West or East side?

Is Humboldt still primarily Puerto Rican?

Hey Jive, I'm on the east side on the corner of Augusta and Sacramento which is the frontage road to Humboldt Blvd.

The Puerto Rican presence is still dominant but the area is slowly gentryfing as redevolement has moved past Western Ave. If you were familiar with this area before you'd notice the change immediately.

Thats what I'm thinking too, being an election year and all.
Because from what i see on the news and read in the papers
crime sure seems like it rising, but ol' boss daley likes to paint
a rosy picture. I'm not buying it.:mad:

Chi-Town is all mixed up from when I lived there a decade ago. Wicker Park went from gang turf to a bedroom for folks who work downtown. They have poetry readings and coffee shop culture in Bridgeport. West Garfield Park has art conservatories, and expensive condos. I see moms with strollers walking the streets of 26 nation at night with babies in strollers. North Lawndale has wi-fi. Heck, I even considered buying a place there. Things sure have changed. But, I do wonder where the displaced people are going to go, since gentrification cuts two ways.

Kup wrote a column long ago that talked about how a Korean mayor would be good for Chicago. I was inspired by that, and when I was a little kid, that's what I wanted to be. Now I know better.

Me running for mayor would make the Epton-Washington mayoral race look commonplace.:)

I used to work for an auto shop in Markham, back when I had my rich white boy haircut. The only time I got threatened was by another rich white boy. :smug:



Jokes aside though, I feel somewhat left out since the only major crime that ever happened in my 'burb was the whole Steve Pfiel deal. :hmm:

That the thing most of the gangs and crime have moved futher west and into the burbs as the inner city where I grew up has gentrified. Time was I 'd get chased anywhere near Wicker Park and Smith Park for that matter.
Now I don't have to take detours to get from Ahsland Ave to
California:cool:
The downside rents in my old hood on Wood street and Division are astronomical :eek:

As I'm sure the property taxes are as well. Daley knows there's $$$ in gentrification, and those homes that used to be taxed for pennies compared to other areas are now nice revenue generators for the city. The thing that bothers me is that from what I've heard from friends, family, and the media is that schools haven't improved much while all this is going on. Chicago would be a MUCH better city if they improved public education. Well at least the teachers aren't going on strike every year like they used to.

Man. this thread has me revisiting my Chicago days. I lived at Sacramento and Palmer, I loved that neighborhood, the bakery next to the california el station, $2 car washes at the gas station @ Fullerton and Sacramento, Cafeteria de Pancho (I think that was the name of it).
