We always had Volkswagens in my family when I was a kid. But my father for some reason went with two AMC products in 1973 or so. A new Matador 2-door and a Ambassador wagon came home with us on the same day. They had the seat belt interlock system--one could not start the car unless the seat belt was fastened. That was fine because we always wore them. But sometimes the Ambassador would not start even with the belts fastened. In that case, one had to pop the hood, sit in the car, put on the belt, and start the car WHILE a second person pressed a release button in the engine bay. This usually happened when mom or one of us were solo. But trying to get a stranger in New York to put their hands in an engine bay when the engine started was very easy to do.

What a giant piece of crap those vehicles were! Nothing but problems. I was so happy when 2 or 3 years later we bought a 1976 VW Rabbit. It was like a mini-BMW.
I always thought they were cool though too!
Though... My aunt and uncle had one of these when they first came out. Nothing but problems.
Yeah but don't forget back in 1950's when AMC motors came out, people like my Dad who fought for our country jumped on the band wagon because it was called American Motors in good old Wisconsin they were a lot more gun ho about made in the US back then. His 60's Rambler wagon I have posted about was AMC

Gah! haven't thought of AMC for a while. My girlfriend back in the day had a Hornet wagon that wasn't too bad, but my brother also had a Gremlin that was basically a giant mechanical turd on wheels.

Who remembers the AMC Rebel The Machine? They came with a 390 cu in (6.4 L) high performance 340 hp engine.

I really didn't care for the Egg shaped things. Another one really I like the Go Pac Javelin this was a true muscle car a neighborhood guy Oscar (RIP), had a 68 or 69? he used to bring to English town race way and it ran stock, 15's in the quarter mile he didn't make it home from Nam.
