Pitchers that would consistently go nine innings in almost every start...
And their career wouldn't last all that long. With the salaries and multi-year contracts in the majors what they are, pitching 7 innings allows the team a chance to have a pitcher that will last as long as the contract.

Singers on street corners belting it out in kick ass harmonies.
Just last night on the subway, three teenagers get on the car, loudly announce "we're trying to earn some money to make a recording" and bust into a short tune with some seriously tight close harmonies, with pro-caliber R&B voices. Totally shocked me; normally when panhandlers in NYC interrupt my commute they're worse than grade school talent show rejects. But these kids had some serious chops.
I gave them a dollar.
