This worth getting?.. (Peavey content)

Since I recently scored a Guild ThunderBass that only runs at 8ohm I'm in need of a new cab. (One Ampeg 210AV won't cut the mustard)

My ideal choice would be the Reeves 1x15, but I'm also keeping an eye out for older cabs that might fit the bill.

I found a deal on a Peavey Model 115 with an unknown speaker in it.

Was thinking of replacing that speaker with a JBL K140 or E140 if it would sound good in the Peavey box.

Here is the cab in question..

Not sure about the JBL, but a Peavey Black Widow would likely sound fine and probably be more closely matched for that enclosure. I was always pleased with the BW equipped cabs I used in the 80's and 90's and it appears that the cab may be from that same time frame.

That really looks like an 1980's, maybe early 90's cab to me (I'm not an expert on dating Peavey gear though). They were well built and quite heavy as I recall. This one appears to have been used a lot but kept in pretty good shape for its age.

If the JBL is what you have your heart set on, I would get dimensions on this cab including the porting characteristics to see if it matches with what the JBL needs to function well. The JBL specs should be easy to get.

They work pretty well in anything from about 3-5 cu ft, at least IME. One version of ideal is probably the old Cabaret 4625b size, 4.5 cu ft., but as always, it's all about the tradeoffs. In any case I would be counting on playing with the port tuning a bit for best results.

I ran across this link: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. It may give you some insight into what at least the E140 needs from an enclosure, more digging would probably get the K140 specs or you could always call JBL customer/tech support...I think they may even have Saturday and Sunday hours.

While you're doing modifications you might want to consider adding a Speakon jack and/or replace the 1/4 inch jack.

Thanks for the link! No need for speakon jacks as I'll be running it with this guild head..

I haven't seen one of those in years, make that decades! This should be a fun project.

OBTW, if you just go to jblpro.com, you should be able to get all types of technical info on all their products including the speakers you're interested in. Good luck!

I had a 1978 TNT and would agree that the cab didn't seem very deep compared to my Mesa, Eden, Hartke and SWR boxes. The cab here reminds me very much of that late 70's through 80's design. I'm pretty sure the box here is ported.
