Quick update: I just scored a mint condition Altec 421-8H series II for a great price.

Thank you Al! I can't wait to hear how it sounds in the Peavey cab.


I'm toying with the idea of having the cab recovered in black smooth Tolex and burgundy grill cloth.

If you look at the spec sheet (attached) you can get a sense for how it will likely sound...probably a little more sealed-cab-like on the bottom end would be my guess. These speakers were used for electric organs and pianos, as well as PA systems. In other words they were not bass guitar specific in design. As long as you go easy on feeding the power it should sound nice assuming the cab is suitable match (and it's probably close).

The sealed-cab-like is a good thing as I tend to like sealed cabs time wise better (generally speaking of course)


As for power. The Guild only puts out 60 watts.. So I should be good there.

You are right. The Guild needs an 8ohm load. This Scorpion speaker is 4ohm.

The cab sounds good with my Micro VR, but it's dark sounding with not a lot of mids.

I've tried it very shortly with the Guild and it sounds massive. Every note is full, and thick.. Yeah I miss tubes.

As I remember it, the Altec sounded somewhat JBL like,
with a little deeper lows, higher highs and less pronounced
hi/mid spike.
Clean, strong, rich and sensitive.
If I am not wrong, I think the sensitiviy is between JBLs and EVs.
That should give more sound per watt from your 60 watt Guild.
