Thoughts on a sedan that can hold a 212 cab

Hi everyone. After many years of SUVs, pickups and wagons, I’ve been thinking of getting a sedan. However the bass player part of my brain says, no way that works.

Any ideas on a midsize or smaller sedan with enough trunk space for an Aguilar 212 cab?

Probably going to have to utilize the back seat, even many hatchbacks won't have quite enough trunk space without at least putting one of the rear seats down. It is quite doable though without a large SUV or crossover.

Nobody makes a sedan big enough these days to fit a larger cabinet. My Berg CN212 fits in the trunk of my 2011 Buick Lucerne but my Mesa Subway 212 doesn't, that goes on the back seat.

I used to fit a Trickfish TF212V in the backseat of a 2008 Mazda 3 without issue.

If you're ok with used, check out a Scion xB. Same platform as the Toyota Yaris, will likely run forever, and can haul a stupid amount of equipment. They're as close to a TARDIS as you can get in realspace.

I have a 2020 Honda Civic Type R which is a hatchback sedan and I can very easily fit my Fender Rumble 500 2x10 in the back along with a few basses. I’m pretty sure it could handle my Eden 4x10 as well.. if you’d like I’ll take a picture of the amps in the trunk for reference.

I had an xB for ages. The Honda Fit was the only vehicle that seemed similarly cavernous based on the exterior dimensions. Also not a sedan and also out of production.

1996 Buick Roadmaster sedan, last full frame LT1 V8 Buick sedan, rides like glass, and hauls ass! Prices range from cheap drivers to around twenty grand for one in like new condition.

Very cheap to insure, and around 20mpg on the highway, even at sustained 80mph.

Drives, handles, weighs, and sized much like a 1966 GTO, which was a mid size car, but much safer.

My 2013 Mazda 3 has trunk room for days. I don't have to haul gear in it these days, but I'm more than confident I could fit amp, cab, bass guitar, double bass and accessories (including music stand). There would be no passengers.

I've been able to do that in a 1988 Ford Tempo, 1996 Honda Civic, and 2007 Honda Accord... I actually think that the Mazda would be the easiest fit. With bass rigs being as small as they are these days, I don't see a problem. The Tempo and the Civic were in my combo amp days. Tempo was a Peavey TNT 115, the Civic was an Ampeg B3.

I have an Aguilar DB212. Heavy. About the size of a 410.

If we’re talking about cars, let’s also talk about a vert stack 212 cab. I have a Genzler vertical 212 - lightweight and compact. Will fit in the back seat of any car, even something like a Mustang.

The one I have weighs 45 pounds, but they came out with an even lighter weight version too. And there’s other brands to choose from as well. That way you drive what you want, snd save your back on load in/out.

Fwiw, I have a Subaru STi hatch bc it does everything, except get good gas mileage. Have thrown large cabs in there, or small ones. Nice to have options.

My wife’s 2014 3 has a good bit of trunk room but the opening is somewhat limiting. My 5 door 3s (2012, 2023) easily carry two Rumble 100s, two Thunderbird cases, a big suitcase for my pedalboard, a cajon, and a mic stand bag, with room for a bit more.

I can fit my Berg 212 in the trunk of my 2014 Civic with enough room left over for my bass, amp, and pedalboard.

Genuinely perplexed to see this many folks saying “won’t fit, use the backseat.”

I could (and did) fit an Aguilar 810 in the backseat of my older Civic for f*** sake

No puns intended. My 2012 honda fit had 5 guitars, 2 amps , a bunch of clothes and supplies in it today. Still had plenty of room to spare , I couldve even organized it better and still be able to have 3 passengers. 38 mpg avg from SD To LA going 75-80 mph with light traffic.

Compromise and Get a hatchback! A VW GTI holds plenty of gear and is wicked fun to drive. You won't regret It.

I could write a very long essay about this, but the short version is: if you want a sedan, you should buy a mid to late 2000's Toyota Avalon. I could haul what ever bass gear I wanted to in it, it ran like a top for the 11 years I owned it up to a quarter million miles, and after that I sold it just $500 less than I paid for it.

8x10 fit the back seat of 01 Toyota Camry....barely but I also removed the lower cushion and it was easy to unbolt the door catch as well.

If you can easily get the seat cushions out and unbolt the door catch you can fit a lot in most rear seats on 4 doors..

Any reason why you'd want a sedan over a hatch?

I've got a 2010 Subaru WRX hatch and can fit the following........
2 x Yamaha DBR15
2 X Yamaha DBR10
Schertler B10 bass combo.
Katana 50ex guitar amp
Soundcraft Ui24 in road case
Speaker stands
Mic stands
2 x Leads bag (small suitcase)
2 basses..... sometimes 3

And if the gig is big enough I'll put the EV 18" Sub in the front passenger seat.
