Threads concerning heavy metal: music's true nerds?

Meh, you've not studied a wide enough cross section of metal lyrics then, have you? Admittedly, there is a huge bias towards that rubbish, but there are some gems hidden away if you're prepared to dig. I could find hundreds of Hip Hop lyrics that depend on misogynism, negativity and hate, but that would wilfully ignore a lot of acts like say, J5, The Roots etc, and definitely NOT be representative that genre.
All this thread proves is that most people who aren't into metal don't understand metal in it's entirety. And surely that's how it is for everything, why single us out? I mean, I'm not into Jazz but I don't criticise Jazz fans for any of their weird behaviours, write all the music off as widdly rubbish or draw similarly erroneous conclusions. But then, metal's an easy target, and admittedly, we do ourselves no favours.
Ultimately, for everyone like me, who sits in the back of a cramped smelly van for six hours to play metal at people who are apparently too cool to give any sign of appreciating your music or the effort you've made to come play it to them, there's a hundred bedroom warriors who know everything about what is and isn't metal. They are the ones who are presenting such a terrible impression of metal fans online. Please don't judge the entire genre on them.
Sure, all those 80's bands. Are you too young or too old to remember. Its not very "metal" to write lovey songs. Listen to Diecast Internal Reveloution or Killswitch Engage the End of Heartache.
Already posted several metal love songs.
Also, lots of metalheads don't consider 80's glam rock bands to be metal.
I once walked into a metal record store when I was out distributing fliers for my punk rock band. When I got to the counter, there were two overweight guys that were discussing the differences between Norwegian black metal and American death/doom/evil/suicide/math metal. I asked the guy behind the counter if I could post a flier, andhe inquired what type of band we were. I told him punk with a little bit of jazz, to which he replied (with a voice and attitude identical to Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons) "you can't post that here. Please take it out of my store and bring it somewhere else." That about sums it up.

eh, i like metal. but not super heavy yelling barely audible metal. i like sabbath, maiden, metallica ect.

There are a LOT of nerds into metal. Recently I have noticed the amout of what I call "nerd metal" bands there are; for example, sonica antarctica (SPELLING?!??!?) Usually contain a female vocalist (accually singing) and keyboards.
Also Corpsegrinder is a massive WOW nerd.
I have found that hardcore/metalcore/deathcore is the most nerd-free type of metal (its also what I listen to).

Weird, because hardcore/metalcore/deathcore is my least favorite kind of metal. Maybe it's not nerdy enough for me.
Hey, I like Sonata Arctica. (btw, no female vocals in Sonata Arctica whatsoever.)

They're actually pretty good in the melodic power metal thing.
And some of their songs are very original and not so generic.
You've got to get past that Dragonforce speed drums and videogame synthesizer parts.
I agree with most female vocalist metal bands.
Like Epica and Within Temptation. So generic and wussy.
Within Temptation was a watered down version of Nightwish.
That's why they became so popular. (Like with many music genres the watered down versions are popular to the masses.)
Nightwish saw what Within Temptation were doing and kicked Tarja out, and also became a watered down version of themselves.
And now they are popular among the kiddies.
While in the 90s I listened to Nightwish when they were ******* metal and I was an outcast for that.

I know you didn't mean to generalize.
I hate things like LOTR and WOW (except I do like the Dune saga). And I don't know much about computers or other nerdy stuff.
I'm into mechanics, I'm a gearhead (or petrolhead for the UKers).
And I am into literature, classical music, wine tasting, whiskey tasting... and all that snobbery.
Admitted, Sonata Artica, which is one of my favourite bands, is at the more shameful end of the scale of all the metal that I like.
Other metalbands I like: Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Iced Earth, Nevermore, Primal Fear, Iron Maiden, Helloween, die Apokalyptischen Reiter, 80s Metallica,...

Nope. I'm still right there with you. I still find Maki's statement about jazz nerds being like fine wine drinking country clubbers to be spot on too, lol.
