i agree with the OP 100%.
jazz fans will talk about music like it was anything else. i like this, i dont like that, thats great, we both still dont understand what john coltrane was doing on this album, yes john mayer does suck, ext ext
funk fans, go to shows and groove all night long.
metal fans argue. and theyre all always right.
me and my guitarist (jam/funk band) have this inside joke, that no matter who your talking to, if theyre one of these "metal guys" and you DARE tell them that you simply dont like metal, they will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS reply in a matter-of-fact tone "oh well thats because you never heard (insert their favorite metal band here)." they also wont listen when you say you have, and dont like metal.

I think geeks are social. Thinking specifically of band geek, computer geek, both very social groups where I am. This can be completely swapped out with nerd however... I think the correct slang term for uber nerdy, socially ******** people would be *loser* in today's society (not that I agree with it). Kind of more OT even looking at a sub-genre of metal you can find many differences of style. This is not the case everywhere (thrash metal comes to mind) but oftentimes there is a necessity for sub-sub or even sub-sub-sub genres to define a specific sound. For instance (too lazy to post links)
Music -> Metal -> Doom Metal -> Melodic Doom Metal = Swallow the Sun
Music -> Metal -> Doom Metal -> Stoner Doom Metal = Electric Wizard
Music -> Metal -> Doom Metal -> Drone Doom Metal = Nadja
etc. etc. etc.
So if I wanted to find more bands that sounded like electric wizard, I could search for stoner doom metal bands. That would ensure I didn't find slayer, or even swallow the sun when I wanted something like Goatsnake for instance.
Edit: There is something under the metal umbrella for everyone I think. Heck, I showed my mom Goatsnake and she liked some of it. Meshugga's nothing album, not so much!
Probably the biggest reason someone wouldn't like electric wizard is because it doesn't hold their attention. At least that's what I've found. People don't give their attention to the music, they have sort of an ADHD impulse to consider it boring if it doesn't go fast or change drastically every 2 seconds.

Indeed. There's so much variety. I mean, on the one hand, you've got bands like Sleep, and then, on the other, you've got Blind Guardian, and still in another direction is Anaal Nathrakh.

Genres are just descriptive terms to summarize what a band basically sounds like without having to start from describing every aspect of their sound from the ground up.
If someone says "such and such" is a "stoner doom metal" band it probably means that most of their songs are quite slow, they've got a huge amount of Sabbath influence, downtuned instruments and probably somewhat low-fi production, usually with clean singing vocals, but not the operatic style that some metal bands favor.
I mean, you could say all that, but it's easier to say "stoner doom metal."
I think there are definitely different doom sounds, but the genre's not really big enough to merit subgenres. I mean, My Dying Bride and Sleep are definitely a lot different, but you can just say "Sleep is very Sabbath-like. My Dying Bride isn't."

No need to specify "metal video". Pretty much all comments on youtube are stoopid and consist of:
1) "This is great vid!"
2) "This vid/band/song/whatever sux!"
or
3) "This vid/band/song/whatever sux becuase of [insert stoopid/short sighted reason]"
Yeah, this has no merit because the comments for ALL the videos on Youtube are the epitome of retardation in the human race.

My friends and I talk about metal bands a lot, but rarely if ever do we argue about them.
Yeah, i just searched "Stephen Hawking" to prove this experiment. Assuming that people with decent intelligence would watch a video of Hawking or even know who he is. (I know a lot of people who have no idea) So here are just a few off the first to pages:

Yes Candiria is a great example of metal can be. Metal is a great genre if you don't get sucked into the politics. The musicians are on top of the food chain. They usually only practice metal because it is so hard to master. But its hard to master any genre. But you can't deny that it is a demanding style.
Great thread. With regard to the original post, I have to self-classify firmly in the 'geek' camp, but that has more to do with profession than the type of music I perform. As stated previously, every genre/sub-group has its fanatics and achieving inclusion into the inner circles can be tough. I've been fortunate enough to play in several different bands with different tastes and styles and met all sorts of neat folks (even some in metal

naah i dont think we are nerds, maybe some of us but seriously, its a big a** comunity, when there is nothing else to talk about, talk about metal, when there is nothing to do, play some metal, when you are bored, play some metal..
i dont know why you think we are nerds when some metalheads are the ones that beat the star trek geeks in highschool or are big enough to rip yourself appart..
