Hey, I'm not sure if anyone has seen yet, but it looks like Crazy Parts in Germany is putting out chrome pickup rings. Here is the link (No affiliation obviously) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gibson-Thun...Accessories&hash=item25734972a8#ht_1913wt_952

As long as these fit well, it would be a good alternative to lull's rings which, at 40 bucks a piece, aren't cheap. Also, it seems that on the new lull site, I can't seem to find the pickups, is he not making them to buy any more?

Our club member NOT put some on his Gibson, using the German ones you have peel the plastic and file on the corners (the covers are not the same radius as Gibson) to get them to fit. Lulls are correct radius and are still available, but they are '60 era which is a very shallow design. Mike's are expensive, they are however, correct, die stamped with no folds in the metal by the same company Gibson used in the '60s, and available in 5 finishes. I just bought a set of Lull pups on 8/3, they have them. :)

Does anybody else here prefer flats on their bird? I put a set of rounds on my Epi Thunderbird the other day, and missed the tone and feel of the flats so much that I went back to flats this afternoon.

ThunderBuckerRanch.com sells nickel rings and spacers, in the exact 60s configuration complete with correct screws for about half what Lull rings cost. Also vintage nickel cover Thunderbird pickups in '63, '66 and MAX spec as well as 5 string EX5.

I tryed them on my Epi tbird IV, didn't really like them, I do have them on my non reverse bird and love them on it. I used Black Beauties on my epi IV and use them on my pro IV now.

What kind of flats did you use? I first went with a set of Fender 9050s I had laying around. Although I liked he feel, I didn't care for the tone, which was kind of washed out and woofy. Not ready to give up on flats altogether, I tried a set from Ernie Ball, and liked the result. Much better clarity, without the woofiness.

I don't have much experience with Black Beauties, but I've heard good things.

Someone knowledgeable tell me what I have here please :bassist:

I'm a history buff, so any history would be great. I know some basics, but I'm looking for legit details.

Thanks!

It's a Non Reverse Thunderbird II made between '65-'69 one of 435 total.....Sweet rare 'Bird

Look here for a little more [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

That's what I thought. I can't wait to have it in my possession to play it!
I wonder why Gibson did such short runs on such cool basses...
I currently have 2 Gibson Les Paul Sig basses, which there were only 627 made.

Because they didn't sell. The NR will be reissued this fall, it will be interesting to see how it does.

Looks like a refin of some kind on yours, originally it was shaded. The strap button has been moved from center back and the headstock should be black. Great bass!

Single P/U Thunderbirds have an incredible voice - They are Earth shaking, World destroyers that eat P basses for lunch :p

Great Bass! As stated above, NR Gibson Thunderbird II. About all I ever play :) Yeah thats a refin for sure. Be careful with that case they are known to bust the headstocks off. Make sure your tuners are turned so the don't touch the bottom of the case. 60's Thunderbirds do not intonate well on the upper register, I have a bridge that solves that problem The Badbird intonation without modification ;)
