That's very true. Most the time you would never know they were playing fretless.
I actually read some Sheldon's history (he was familiar to me from Tommy Bolin) and it seems he and Kenny were friends from the Colorado area and both started to play fretless roughly at the same time.

tweechy, tweechy……chances are the reason you haven’t played one in awhile is they just didn’t built as many as SVTs…..kinda like the Betamax, it became extinct (like Polytones and for similar reasons)….for the time the concept was excellent but the implementation suffered from a reliability standpoint….
they also had to be AC coupled (by way of a capacitor, not transformer) due to the fact that reliable opposite gender (NPNs I believe) bipolar transistors were not available hence an unbalanced power supply and need for a DC block….
on paper it’s a no contest
the SVT weighs almost 100 pounds more, boasts an extra available 100 Watts and pushes 80 inches of cone vs 18….
absolutely, the 600B in particular if you want to be more period correct..

I've brought up bringing them back to Mass many a time, my wife hates the winter, I'm not sure if her mother could handle the long flight(s) though, she broke her hip a couple of years ago and can't walk anymore. I think I'm stuck here for the time being anyway. Kentucky, ever meet either of the Everly Brothers? I ask that of everyone from Kentucky, been a big fan of theirs since I was a kid.
I think he was also the first well known person I knew that played one. Fender made their first ones in late 1969, that CAR '68 P bass I always talk about had a rosewood fretless P neck on it when I first got it in 1977, the owner said he bought it new with a fretted neck and got the fretless when they were first available, course I ruined it with Rotosounds and lousy technique very quickly.
Proving once again(like y'all needed proof)that I'm old[school]. I strongly dislike* that (un)bass sound.

And they've got such a great tone.
Killer little amp, if you can find one.
Interesting to know. I first encountered him with Frampton. Great player and knows when to play, and maybe more importantly when not to play.

I kind of lost interest in fretless bass when everyone started trying to be Jaco, Tony Franklin rekindled my interest though. He rocks.
Yea, we don't want to call attention to anything.
I haven't much experience with GK. My limited experience was likely why I never clicked with their tone (not really big and mids in the wrong place for me--more aggressive maybe). But that could have been me more than the amps. Loved the way they look and did consider them a few times.
