Yep - when I first started Gildaxe 10 years ago next month, my (musician and designer) friend Catherine came up with "Your Guitar Should Dress Like A Star" and she nailed it for me. Here's a flash-pic of a silver-leaf finish I did for Allen Whitman (Mermen, Joe Satriani) with a final finish by Pat Wilkins. Allen calls the look "Abalone Daze". Stage lights make it look like it's glowing from the inside.

I've never been in a not cover band. In this area, originals bands don't get gigs.

I would argue that even originals bands are cover bands (of themselves). Especially the big touring acts that have a whole show beyond a set list that has little or no changes show to show.

We do both. I understand the opinion of some that there's something lesser about covering songs. I understand having that opinion but I personally don't agree with it. Certain songs will get covered by all levels of professional musicians. Go to YouTube and you will commonly see/hear many top-tier musicians cover a classic song. It's part of how songs become timeless. Most are what I consider renditions that reflect that artists 'take' on that particular song. Traditional Jazz is all about this concept. But even if it is a straight ahead 'cover' of a song, as long as it's done well with good feel - people like hearing it. Original music has to be really good for people to like it right out of the box. So to me they are both legitimate music forms and both equal forms of entertainment.

For those of us meeting up in Santa Cruz 7/2-7/3 can we put together a list of what basses we'll have in attendance.
I don't want to pack and haul a duplicate of something that will already be there.

Unfortunately (for me and all melon lovers) commitments have been made and so I will not be able to attend the meet up. I will have to try harder for the next one.

I'm really a Chuck Berry/Stones type rocker. If I were you I'd be playing my a** off, you're a great player. The more I listened to it today the more I think I slowed it down and he was fighting to keep it steady and I was blaming the drummer.

I will go a step further. There are big touring acts that do covers. A couple of examples off the top of my head:
Rush did an album of cover songs in 2004
Dream Theater makes occasional appearances under the name Nightmare Cinema and exclusively play covers.

It was a matter of organizing a number of things and the outcome was that I get custody of my daughter for the long weekend (Canada day, not Independence day - we get Friday, not Monday). As much as I like all of you, my daughter rates slightly higher on my priorities.
