Barrett Jackson is who you quote when you need to place a replacement cost value on your collector car for insurance purposes, Mecum is only a tad more realistic on selling prices. If you really want to go down the auction path to purchase a collector your best bet is probably Bring a Trailer or EBay.

Personally, I don’t like the auction route, much to easy for shills to enter the betting frenzy to drive prices up and then there’s the issue of minimal time for tire kicking or lack of a proper PPI.

If you’re really serious about buying a collector car, I’d recommend joining a car club that specializes in that model and talking to club members for leads on a good all numbers matching straight body no rust example. They know where they are and can offer tons of advice on what to look for and what to avoid. At the very least, talk in depth to a current owner of the type of car you’re interested in buying.

So........

For those of us meeting up in Santa Cruz 7/2-7/3 can we put together a list of what basses we'll have in attendance.
I don't want to pack and haul a duplicate of something that will already be there.

FWIW these are the basses I'll consider bringing 3 of....

'89 Gibson with Lull pickups

Jackson TBX
'76 Gibson
'77 Gibson
2021 Non Reverse
'77 Greco II
'06 Studio

I’ve taken my VP to jazz jams and it’s fine, but it’s in it’s element on a stage rocking out.

I found Veronica's '64 to sound fantastic at reasonable at home levels. It may just be that specific bass with the pickup it has in it. The one thing about a VP is that it's going to be fairly consistent with other VPs. A '64 may not be all that similar to other '64s. Manufacturing tolerances are a whole lot tighter now.

Yep - when I first started Gildaxe 10 years ago next month, my (musician and designer) friend Catherine came up with "Your Guitar Should Dress Like A Star" and she nailed it for me. Here's a flash-pic of a silver-leaf finish I did for Allen Whitman (Mermen, Joe Satriani) with a final finish by Pat Wilkins. Allen calls the look "Abalone Daze". Stage lights make it look like it's glowing from the inside.
