Visited my HO train buddy on Saturday, his current project - '65 GTO

Angry Bird.

During the early 70's I almost bought a '65 GTO with a 400 (changed engine, original was a 389) with tri-power and a 4 speed for about 400 bucks, it was beat but I wanted it bad, the guy changed his mind and I don't know what happened to it.

That’s a great deal unless the neck is wrenched. Or it’s hot.

It’s too bad someone felt that thread was the appropriate place to drop a Babicz rant. I’m speculating, but I don’t think that poster understands how they work and whether or not he should have removed the shim underneath the bridge before resorting to a lot of filing and polishing. That’s the only time I’ve heard of someone doing that.

I also had a little problem with him in another thread last week about Ricks, forgot which thread (and don't want to remember).

I always got to write my own bass lines.

VERY good bass line, I like the low F# then G# climb you sneak in there, everything you've posted so far has been great and you played in some great bands, great sound too. I know, I can stop now . I've always loved playing in original bands playing my own lines, I too was/am adventurous.

Wonderful but I never quite understand 3 carbies on a V8. 3 on a straight 6…. Yes, makes sense. Shouldn’t the V8s be 2 or 4? (Like a Thunderbird).

Didn’t a 70s Alfa have 6 singlethroat Dell O’orto carbies on a V6 ? ?The first Alfa Six sedan?

They open progressively I believe, or you run on the middle one and then the outer two open simultaneously and the fun begins.

Good point. The VPs sound nice at home, but lack depth...great live in a big room. The '64 is the most uninteresting sounding bass I own...at home. Live--it's the best sounding bass.

A lot (most?) of basses open up when loud.

I’ve never been in a cover band oddly enough.

You're lucky, I haven't played in a real original band for probably twenty years, I miss it though, I've had some opportunities late;y but they're all back in the States. I've always had good ears too and can play on the fly, that's why I like jams.

Here's a (dark) blues jam from probably 5 or 6 years ago with a TF fretless and SVT. Can't be very adventurous with this stuff. Drummer was all over the place for some reason and he's usually really good.

I've never been in a not cover band. In this area, originals bands don't get gigs.

That was great! The bassline and the song too. The singer is excellent. There's something in his voice that reminds me of Hugh Cornwell of The Stranglers and Steve Kilbey of The Church but doesn't exactly sound like either.

For those of us meeting up in Santa Cruz 7/2-7/3 can we put together a list of what basses we'll have in attendance.

Barrett Jackson is who you quote when you need to place a replacement cost value on your collector car for insurance purposes, Mecum is only a tad more realistic on selling prices. If you really want to go down the auction path to purchase a collector your best bet is probably Bring a Trailer or EBay.

Personally, I don’t like the auction route, much to easy for shills to enter the betting frenzy to drive prices up and then there’s the issue of minimal time for tire kicking or lack of a proper PPI.

If you’re really serious about buying a collector car, I’d recommend joining a car club that specializes in that model and talking to club members for leads on a good all numbers matching straight body no rust example. They know where they are and can offer tons of advice on what to look for and what to avoid. At the very least, talk in depth to a current owner of the type of car you’re interested in buying.

What kind of nonsense advice is this? Surely you can trust someone who stands to profit from your transaction... Don't we always take the seller (or the agent) at their word??
