hmmm, it’s not, he used a quarter (whole set) when I saw them live in 83/4(?) my hs buddy used to work security at the Hollywood Sportatorium and we could get up very close to the stage…

90125 Tour? Did he use the pelham blue NR for anything on that gig? I know he used it for the "Gimme Some Lovin'" they did for an encore but he might have used it for "Our Song" too (they played it at the early stages of that tour).
And played through Marshalls.
He also used a Fender Dual Showman during The Yes Album era and Sunn Coliseum guitar amp and what else...
What we (or at least I) need is a comprehensive site of Squire's gear. Like the Entwistle site on thewhonet. The basses he used for different songs in the seventies are pretty much covered in my head but the lack of amp-info is connected to my lack of sleep.
He was a giant. Count me in as a big fan.
He must have used also the white Electra (City Of Love, Cinema, Leave it) and the 8-string Ranney for "Changes" and "Hearts".
That was a great line-up. Rabin was a huge find for the band.
I was aware of the Sunn gear, but no clue with the Dual Showman.
Also a big fan of his too!
Roundabout tone is a little bit brighter than his usual because Chris overdubbed his entire bass part on one of Steve's hollowbody archtop Gibsons, miked acoustically.
Also did not know this.
If he did overdub his entire part it's not used (or audible) for the whole song. It's there at times and also most likely the reason he started to use the white potatohead 8-string Ric* when they performed it live. First sightings of that are from the "Topographic Oceans" tour '73 or '74.
*debuted in studio on "Fish Out Of Water" on "Safe (The Canon Song) which also had the debut of his pelham blue NR!
When I had more time than money and wanted my strings to be as bright as possible, I used to clean roundwound strings to extend their life. Last year I tried it on flats and they came out sounding new. Then I had to break them in again
All you need is a 3’ piece of 2” ABS or poly pipe. Glue a cap on one end, fill with Methyl Hydrate, drop the strings in ball end first, leaving the tuner ends hanging on the edges of the open end of the pipe. Let them soak for a few hours, remove the strings and then let them dry.
Don’t leave the Methyl Hydrate in the pipe, it will eventually break down the plastic.
Much of that bright “new string” sound is restored by cleaning the strings. I play with a heavy touch, so my roundwounds also get flat spots from the frets - they only last so long.
If I don’t practice with a pick regularly, I get pain in my right thumb. I need that “tool in my kit”, so I work it into my practice routine.
Love that tune! I thought Chris Squire used 2 SVTs, one for each PU.
they did use it, known fact… really the only way you can wrap around to the syncopated low E on the one…
He started to use Ampeg in the 90's IIRC.
I also recall reading that he split the signal from each pickup to a different effects (for example he used the fuzz for the neck pickup channel) and both lines went to the same amp so it wasn't the usual 'neck pickup clean - bridge pickup with effects' thing.
But anyway or anyhow he did it he sounded great and the bass parts were always very unique.
