Thunderbird Club

They are TB+ pickups but in humbucker sized covers. They were used on the LP Standard, Money Bass, The LP Oversized Bass, and even the Epi Elitist Tbird. They are clearer and more aggressive sounding than the regular soapbar style TB+ pickups. I have them in one of my basses (but under chrome covers) and they are fantastic pickups.

This video gives you a good idea of the difference between the two types of TB+ pickups.

This bass has the humbucker sized pickups under the chrome covers.

I’d like to get one (or two) of those humbuckers for my Mann Armstrong.

That’s actually fairly close - here’s the Alembic write up with some interesting back story about the bass and it’s design…

The Spider basses are pretty rare, I’ve been waiting years for one to pop up in the used market. On a related note, about 10 years ago I did manage to snag an equally rare bird from Alembic. It’s their Dragon Wing bass which I think sits at about a dozen units. I took the dive because I loved the quality, feel and sound of my other Alembic, an Essence bass. I wasn’t disappointed with the Dragon Wing, it even exceeded my Essence in quality and workmanship, which I didn’t think possible.

According to Alembic, John Entwistle had approached them several times to have Alembic make a copy of his famous Buzzard Bass. Alembic refused but offered to design a completely new bass in the same vein as the Buzzard but very much an unmistakable Alembic original. John agreed, so Alembic started the designs. The design was completed and ready for Johns final review when Alembic got the news that John had just passed away. Alembic decided to build and release a very limited number of Dragon Wing basses in his honor. I have one of them and it truly is a breathtaking design (love it or hate it) and plays like absolute silk (even purple silk no less).

Here’s a pic of the Dragon Wing…

And the Alembic Essence bass…

Outstanding backstory on JE and an exquisite instrument. I love Alembic . Entwistle, Phil Lesh , Stanley Clarke just to name a few awesome players.

Here is a later one, also rear engined, a Renault 8 Gordini quite the angry ant in its day.

A mate had a grey R8 (not a Gordini) as his first car and we used to go out in it quite a bit. The R8 did a lot of rallying in Australia and some circuit work.

It’s like a 1300cc 911 :D
(is that George choking on his breakfast?)
@GBassNorth
But it was repeatedly hit with the ugly stick.

Mercy me! I think I’ve been overcome by a case of the vapors! Quick, take me to the fainting couch!

Yea, I see the similarity, they both have four wheels and a steering wheel and they’re both kinda blue.
I’ll keep mine, thanks…

Well, I never go out.
But thanks to a good friend, caught a little Jazz action last night.
Awesome trio.
Band playing pics weren’t allowed.

That upright bass doesn’t look too upright to me.

Seriously, nice Buick you have there. Looks like the one we got from my MIL.

Not ours, but looks just like it. About as boring as it can get.

LOL - it’s not bad for a beater.:D She’ll likely go up for sale in a few months if you’re interested.
Thanks, but we have a Buick. (Please see added pic above.) But do like your's better. :D

The Buick is the first car we've had in well over two decades. I like setting up higher and cars feel like I'm setting on the street.

The Queen with a non Thunderbird?? Am I in bizzaro world - the one in which I am a good bass player?? Nope, not that one it seems...

Looking forward to the sonic review.

I do have a couple non Thunderbirds around the house - A Washburn AB-20, the Les Paula Oversize, and now the MPC. :D
It would be bizzaro world if you didn't have watermelons :woot:

The black 2018 Thunderbird came back to me. Let's hope Gibson continues the every-five-years "trend" of left-handed Thunderbirds and I can send this back for one next year. In the meantime, it's a good testbed. I have one set of RS66 left, so I'll put those on this one so I can directly compare them to the SITs.
I don’t like the texture of the Rotos. It will be interesting to find if you hear any difference and if they die quicker than the SITs.
