A tone cap in a passive bass is basically a filter that passes some of the frequency to the ground. You only actually hear the signal that is not filtered to ground. So if your tone pot is turned to zero more of the signal is available to the cap where the frequencies can be filtered to ground. The higher the caps value the more high frequency signal is passed to ground. So yes the .068 cap in the Goth will send more high end content to ground where you can't hear it vs a standard Tbird cap at .047uf. As the tone knob is turned closer to 10 (or max) less high end content is sent to ground and the bass sounds brighter.

I personally like the .022 cap on the Goth because the pickups are overwound and darker sounding than most Tbirds. The .068 cap in the Goth was just too much of a good thing in my opinion. The .022 cap opens up the Goth sound quite a bit and drastically increases the range of the tone knob.

A very worthwhile experiment would be to get a half dozen different value tone caps (they are dirt cheap) and try each one (just clipped in place not soldered) until you find what you like best.


A no load tone pot should be standard on every bass. Just adds a whole new flavor to the bass.

My 1996 RI '62 Jazz bass came with an .022 uf cap in it, even with the tone set to zero it was still bright, tried an .047 uf cap, still too bright, it now has a 0.1 uf cap and it's perfect, open it's just as bright as it ever was as they are essentially out of the circuit when they're open but it can get a nice old fashioned bottomy sound if I want it.

I opened for them during the early 80's in a big club (Shaboo Inn, CT) but wasn't interested in the band and have no idea if he was there or if he was, what he played, ......bad attitude, I know.

Pretty sure he wasn't. He quit in 1980 after "Just Testing" album and tour after the band wanted to bring in a lead vocalist. Stupid them.

That is what replaced the Rivoli once Epiphone moved production to Japan.

Pickups are nice and clear with rounds and still thumpy. 30.5 inch scale


350 is not a bad price if everything is fully functional. 300 better considering what's missing.
