Absolutely not. The B-15 sounds great on its own. I have the pre only for when I have to use an amp I'm not familiar with or don't like. I really don't know why it sounds terrible running into the front. Maybe it's because when I need to use it it's with an amp I'm not familiar with, so I would have no idea how to set it to sound best with the pre, nor do I have time before a gig to play around with settings. So I just settle for "good enough" with said amp.
1221s use this voltage doubler that creates an interesting compressing effect on a bass but not so much guitar…. almost makes you wanna play more staccato and percussive…..hard to pin point what it is….
I can’t even imagine. I cranked the SVT to 1:00 on Thursday night. We’ve had a bear in the area. I don’t think he’ll be by our place anytime soon.
I think you want make sure you’re not overdriving the Ampeg’s preamp, so keep the output level from your preamp low. If there’s a master on the Ampeg, crank it and start really low on the pre gain.
That looks like a nice head. I've looked all over the place at Univox heads and combos with Google and nothing jogs my memory for the one I had. I bought it in 1968 and sold it in 1969. Course if I at least had a mental picture of it, it might be easier. When I first started coming to Lima I joined a band here that had a 100 watt Teisco tube guitar head with a big double 15" cab, I loved the sound of the head, it was just loud enough that it would break up slightly and sounded really good. The next time I came back he had gotten rid of it, I wanted the thing.

I can't remember ever running one even up to noon. They're so high gain, at least the 70's heads, they're putting out full power at 10 or 11 o'clock usually.

Perfect. Rule of thumb is that DCR for a speaker circuit is 80% of the nominal impedance. So a 4 ohm speaker (or cab) measures 3.2 ohms DCR, an 8 ohm measures 6.4, etc.
Coolest looking EB I can recall seeing. And just in time for Hallowe'en!
Some voltage doublers didn't take everything into account. They couldn't meet current demand when slammed and the voltage would collapse - especially with lower frequencies. Is that what was happening here?
