It's amazing that there are so many to choose from these days. When I drank years ago, Bourbon was obviously around (much of it consumed by me!), but it has become the really cool thing in recent years, kind of like boutique beer I suppose. Years ago it was was the stuff of serious drinkers, generally. Now it's exploded into whole new and greatly expanded market. I'm not sure what caused the change, but it has taken off in ways I never would have guessed. Marketing, a trend? Who knows. I would have loved the vast number of options offered these days. And I'll take mine with nothing to mess up the taste please!

The Magnum weight is an instant pass, but I do like the way they look & sound. It had a nice string-mute that moved in and out of position with a slider tab.

I refurbished a '70s Magnum neck for my "Devil Magnum" - a very nice neck; mahogany w/an ebony fb and a carbon band running down the length of the neck back. I made the body (based on a late '60s Ampeg "Devil Bass") from a single slab of Honduran mahogany - it was very light, just over 8lbs and balanced perfectly due to the upper horn. Pat Wilkins knocked it out of the park with the finish. Novak Darkstar/V-T stacked knob, Hipshot bridge.

When I first started coming out to Lima I joined a band and used a 100 watt Teisco lead head they had for bass, it sounded pretty good.

A big inspiration for me - someone is currently marketing (new-purchased the brand name) Teisco pedals ...

LOL - been there, done that. Let’s just say the first time posting of audio clips on TB is beyond a royal PITA and a complete waste of time. The mods need to make it as easy as posting a picture.


I’m no expert in this field, but from a layman’s point of view, it looks to me like the “Coolness” of bourbon tasting has increased over the years with the number of botique and high cost special run and aged offerings. Kind of a Starbucks effect - create a market by marketing the “experience” to consumer segments with excess disposable income, price the product at traditionally ridiculous prices and create a “buzz” for your product in the media that targets affluent and near affluent consumers.


Pretty much the same here. I’ll be sure to bring some with me when you come down to Carpinteria. We’ll celebrate all things Thunderbird and knock back a sip or two of fine libation at Padero Beach Grill.

Completely agree! I have yet to find a Starbucks coffee that tastes as good as a regular cup of Java at Duncan Donuts, and nothing I’ve ever tried (coffee wise) tastes as good as a cup of coffee at White Castles Hamburgers at 2am in the morning.

Dennyy’s coffee at about 2:15 AM with bacon, hash browns and toast is also pretty hard to beat.

About 6 years ago I helped my friend Haroon carry/move a B6 down a L-O-N-G flight of exterior stairs to my Element here in SF. He got it for FREE because the Craigs List seller wasn't around to help us. (his wife let us in to get it) He did some work on it and it's now 'fully functioning' and sounds like a B3. Doesn't have the rotating speaker, but that can easily accessed via an ap that simulates it remarkably well. It was the "home"version of the B3.

The very first bass I ever owned was a Teisco. All I remember was it was red, had a headstock like that first one in the pic, and had those white plastic rocker switches, so I’m guessing it was one of those. I virtually did not know how to play yet, it had OLD flats on it, and I was a Steve Harris fan, and it definitely did not have his sound….

That body looks a lot like a Guild Jetstar at least to me, that looks like a cool bass.

That's a very cool bass also - it's on my list if I can ever find one in need of resurrecting for a good price.

This is the version I would want to find - missing the two long finger rests on both sides above the Darkstar pu.

I had an inexpensive (but really good quality) MII RI of the Jetstar by De Armond for awhile - it was a very decent bass. I'd still have it if the hs was like the one I want.

That (fine) metallic brown (love it!) Del Rey is an awesome bass. It has old flats on it and can out-Jamerson any P-bass - pillowy bass to take to the bank. And because of the 30" scale - so easy to play. I have played it live but have yet to record playing it, but I'm sure it would sound great recorded. They are still out there on eBay & Reverb for usually a fair price so as long as you get one w/a good neck - it's a real bass.

They aren't cheap but for a good guitarist in a power trio - it would open up a lot of possibilities.

One of our guitarists had a B9; it died. He hasn't replaced it. It added some extra depth(?)on some of our songs. Oh, well.

About the Hammond: I prefer the C3, just because it was used by Jon Lord, Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Eddie Jobson etc. It looks cooler, to me. But it's essentially the same as B3.
My friend (thankfully I have lots of friends with cool gear) has an M3 which has been modded to have the same scanner vibrato as the B3/C3. The "foldback mod", if I recall correctly.

Hugh Banton from Van Der Graaf Generator used both Farfisa and Hammond during the bands lifespan in the seventies. He modded the heck out of both and had a really unique sounds. After he quit the band he started to build organs for churches.

I had this-Yamaha YC45D. Great, if heavy, "portable" organ with switches for piano, vibes, harpsichord, and some others I don't recall until it died and no one knew how to fix it. Wound up giving it away to a guy who could use the parts of 2 or 3 to make one good one.

Chick Corea used on with Return To Forever, Tom Coster played one in Santana and many others used it too. It was the flagship of the YC series if I'm not mistaken. Pity yours died.

I'm not a keyboard player by any means but if I was looking for an organ I'd probably get one of those old YC's. I have CS-5 and CS-01 synths and CP-30 piano, why break the circle?
