Thunderbird Club

Yes. Works ok (not perfect, but good enough) for both reverse and non reverse body shapes (see the 5 station rack in the background to the right of Marshall’s smiling face)…

Note - it works ok for home use, but I wouldn’t use it on stage or around a lot of traffic. Works very good for FSOs.
Edit - actually it’s to Marshall’s right, which is to the left of his smiling face in the picture.

Thanks, did Mike glue it in or is it screwed? Is it done both ways by different luthiers?

He shimmed it slightly to give the neck some pitch, it was screwed on. That was a fun bass, P Bass tone without the Pbass.

I love Rotosound and pretty much use Swing 66's exclusively but they make some amazingly light strings, they only have one short scale set and it has a .90 E string. I took those off my EB-3 real quick and found some DR Sunbeams with a .105 E. If you think a .90 E on a long scale is light, try it on a short scale.

No thanks, I recently have been getting into short scale, and one of them has a set of flats with .109 (I think they are LaBellas), and it work’s really well for D Standard and even drop C.

This is a Fender American Performer Mustang neck on a Warmoth mini-P body that had the neck pocket cut custom for the neck. Fresh new poly black, Schaller bridge, Nordstrand NP4. Plays great, lots of fun to play.

I’m no fan of the Mustang body shape at all.

I've tried those and I was worried about the neck with the EB-3 although I was able to get it fairly good with the truss rod, but with drop tuning they would have been be good I'd imagine. I ended up using their .105's for a while, I still have those on an EB-2 and (I think) one EB-3. I played flats for a long time, probably ten years but recently got real sick of them. I do like La Bella flats, very good strings and they last a long time.

I've always wondered, how do they get the Fender necks on those? Does it take a lot of routing after the original neck is heated(?) and taken off, are they screwed on like a P bass or are they glued in place? Any details you know would be appreciated as I've always wondered and can't find the search function. :smug:
Making a Fenderbird from a neck-through Reverse Tbird would entail cutting off the neck :crying: and routing the neck pocket. If you were working from a Non-reverse, you could remove the neck with heat and steam, and then route the neck pocket for the Fender neck and bolt it on. Most folks wouldn’t go there these days…

Most of the Fenderbirds out there start out as bolt neck Epiphones. The Fender neck is wider, so you route the pocket or cut down the neck heel. You also need to work out the neck angle for the type of bridge. 3 points and 2 points are higher than a bent plate.
Or just get/build a custom body.

I didn't even think of the neck through. I'm not going to do it, I like Thunderbird necks better than Fenders, just curious but thanks both you guys because I've always wondered what it entailed and now I know.

Speaking of Tbird necks, I normally really don’t pay any attention to neck size, but last night I was playing my Gibson 2021 NR bird for an hour or so then switched over to one of my other Tbirds and immediately noticed how thin (front to back) the neck was compared to the new NR. The NR has a very rounded and, for a Tbird, beefy neck. No baseball bat, very comfortable to play but might end up being a bit more durable design than previous Tbirds.

The front to back neck thickness right up against the 9th fret of my Gibby 2021 NR bird is .999”

for comparison…
BaCH NR bird .857”
China Goth .885”
Acaica fanned fret 5 string NR bird .889”
BlingBird (with slightly shaved P bass neck) .915”
Eppi VP .939”
Greco IV .941”
Korean Goth .942”
Gibby 2015 bird .965”
Gibby 2013 bird .990”

.885" is ideal for me.
These alien hands prefer a flat neck.

Finally found why I was getting intermittent cut out on my amps. First, thought the Sunn was having issues, but when I got the MM, same deal. Then thought it was the wrong speaker cables (same on both amps). Then thought the instrument cable was bad…brain dead didn’t realize it was only with my CP since it is what I play virtually 100%. Breaking out the soldering gun.

Well hell, that's good news, and a no cost fix.
