No preference because I couldn't tell you what's Alnico and what's ceramic.

Not sure if any of my humbucker-basses have ceramics atm, unless maybe the Pro 5?
I doubt the bolt-on 'birds are, but pretty sure the Sterling/Stingray I had was; I could never quite get the sound out I wanted from it (but that may have been the electronics package as much as anything).

The 5-string T-bird sounds fine-ish, and may be ceramic, not sure. Of course, with its active electronics, it's hard to compare to the others.....


For non-humbuckers, I think only my Squier Jazz & Ibanez SR1200 (with the Geezer p/j set) are not ceramic but again I'd be comparing active basses to passive basses.

I don't think I have any comparable pickups in both an active and a passive bass

Heard about SEA-TAC encountering some security issues.
Were you caught up in all that?

I got to the airport at 5:30 am and it was a zoo. My case didn't make it onto the plane, which screwed up my schedule for the rest of the day. Fortunately, I got on an earlier flight home, since the flight I was scheduled to be on got canceled. I would be in Eugene now, since pretty much everything is canceled now. TSA wasn't too bad relative to everything else. That says everything you need to know about the mess. Funny thing is that the boy and the girl flew out at about 2 pm and had no problems at all.

I got to the airport at 5:30 am and it was a zoo. My case didn't make it onto the plane, which screwed up my schedule for the rest of the day. Fortunately, I got on an earlier flight home, since the flight I was scheduled to be on got canceled. I would be in Eugene now, since pretty much everything is canceled now. TSA wasn't too bad relative to everything else. That says everything you need to know about the mess. Funny thing is that the boy and the girl flew out at about 2 pm and had no problems at all.

My family coming from india was delayed 12.5 hours. Lied to get them to check their luggage then told them a hour later at the gate. Real fun with 2 small kids…

And proof my grandson doesn’t always scream at me

Electric trains, there's just something about them and this time of year.........
Had freezing rain overnight so it's a very bad idea to go anywhere just now, so here's some test shots of models. I gave these a cool filter to suggest a somewhat cloudy day.

I think there are too many other factors that go into pickup design/construction to base a decision on the magnet type alone.

Alnico V all the way! Treble/mids zip and zing with a transparent low and mild inherent distortion. Ceramic magnet TB plus sound like someone beating a box.

8 degrees here high winds 50-60 mph gusts, snow. Everything is shut down except the House of Guitars, I foolishly stuck my hand up for the 6 pm -12 am shift. Till then I'm in the basement bending balsa and sanding.

I think there are too many other factors that go into pickup design/construction to base a decision on the magnet type alone.

I would think, probably, the most direct comparison would be one of EMG's pickups that's available as both ceramic and alnico. May still be some construction differences, they should be pretty minimal?

It's Friday already so I was a day late yesterday. And all the birthday wishes in retrospect from me too.

Got a new compressor yesterday:

It has a blend knob so I can do parallel compression. You can also choose which frequency gets trough when the blend is more in the dry signal area (low, mid or full range).
I like the heavy compression ala Tony Levin a lot but it lends to a certain style of playing. With this I can get the best of both worlds.

Did two clips. First is a King Crimson riff which is a bit of a handfull especially when played with a Wetton attack (=hard). First time it's without and 2nd time with the compressor. Subtle but it evens it out in my opinion.

Second clip is an old Police riff/line played with a pick and clean tone.

Will try to listen later. Not playing on my tablet.

Brrr… a hobbit!

It only got down to 14 here. Only. That was cold enough. But it’s warmed up to 30, it’s sunny, and the wind is down to 13-22mph. Yeehah!

That's one of the several reasons I moved to CA from the mountains of E. TN - the lowest temp we've had this year was 27, in Feb.

It doesn't often get below freezing here - I think only like 17 nights/0 days this year (so far?)

We don’t usually have more than a week or so max of nights below freezing, and maybe 1-2 days like that, though the ;last few years have had more aggressive invasions from the north (looks askance at Canada).

Gotcha, just glad you're ok.
The airports are a total mess right now.
12 degrees and 30-50 mile an hour gusts.
And where i live, which is right off the inlet leading into lower Manhattan, the gusts are reaching up to 60.
