Thunderbird Club

Hi,

I have an Epiphone Thunderbird IV Bolt-On, it’s actually a decent bass but seems to have a fairly loud and noticeable buzzing noise.

The buzzing goes away when you touch the strings or bridge or any metal part, I am not great when it comes to bass electronics but I’ve read that if the buzz goes away when you touch the strings it is grounded properly so I suspect this is more of shielding /RF Interference issue but would like some advice.

I have opened it up and resoldered all the wires that didn’t look like they were making a good connection to the pots and output jack but the buzz remains.

The thing I don’t understand is that this issue wasn’t always apparent and I’ve had the bass nearly a year, at one point the output jack was loose so when I tightened the nut in that the buzz went away (I think), but maybe I was playing it at lower volume and didn’t notice it at the time.

Is it possible for a bad output Jack to cause buzzing or is it most likely a case of needing to shield it fully? There is currently no shielding in the electronics cavity.

I actually had the bass up for sale as I am trying to downsize my collection, this was before even noticing this issue so then had to withdraw the ad as I need to fix this before selling as I don’t want to pass the issue to someone else, but I still want to get rid of it afterwards eventually so I don’t want to pay a luthier for it to get professionally shielded, it is also quite a hassle getting the bass to a repair shop as I don’t drive currently, I’m looking for the cheapest and easiest solution or tips to try myself.

I have bought some copper tape but now i’m not sure if the adhesive is conductive….it’s a slug repellent copper tape, I probably should have done more research before buying the tape….I know.

Any help or advice would be appreciated, thank you.

The slug tape I’ve used has conductive adhesive. I tested continuity with a small strip of tape over the top of a larger strip. I haven’t found a need to use it on any of my 3 Tbirds.

It currently has unknown functionality, I've got to wire in a battery connector (and put a battery in) and then see what happens.

But, the main problem with your suggestion: there is no cover
(The only one I've found online that might work, they want like $100 + $10 shipping :eyebrow::meh::rollno::roflmao::roflmao: )
Make one from a piece of record vinyl. I think @WillyW has done that.

Unfortunately? no.....not sure if I have any vinyl albums left :sorry:

If the one on my Ibanez 5-string will fit, I'll copy it - I might send it off for that though. I was already planning on having one copy of it made when I got the trc copied (2 out of 3 of my Ibanez-es don't have one), so maybe I'll just get two.
But I haven't tried it yet, the opening on the RB800 looks pretty small.......
They do have thrift stores in Sacto you know.

Absolutely.

I need to plan a trip to Finland, hear you play and talk music. We live a world apart. We would be good friends if we lived closer. Such is the way with this club. There are so many of us with the same interests and tastes. It really is amazing.

I have two friends in Oz (Geoff and Kat) who I’m anxious to meet in person. And three in Finland. One or two in the Netherlands. Not to mention Bob, the Expat in Brazil. I’ve met and bonded with Jeff in NY. We’re bros. I need to meet Ken in Brooklyn. And Scott, Bryan, Roger, Andy, Instagator, Mark and so many others. And of course Irv in Vancouver. THIS CLUB IS AWESOME.

I’d love to meet Mike in Florida. But I’ll never go there. And he’ll never come to Cali. My Family dodged a huge bullet when my Dad quit a Job in ‘68 rather than move to the Cape (Cocoa Beach) when I was a kid.

We had a small US west (best) coast GTG last summer. Great people and a whole lot of fun. Meeting in person is special.

George and I are close enough that we’ve (and my wallet) met twice. He’s a great guy. His bass room is to die for!

I’ve met Kara once. It was great!! She sold me two TBirds! And we know how knowledgeable she is. We need to get her to the next GTG.

Bottom line. I’ve gotten so much from this club that there is no way I can pay it all back. But if anyone is headed to SoCal, let me know. We’ll leave the light on for you. You’re always welcome.

That’s a top post Marshall. I’d be honoured to buy you a pint of Guinness… or two!

I finally got a Pneck for my Eppi Goth, just have to get some Gotoh tuners, and about 10 days out for the luthier.

I won't have any use for the Eppi neck. However, I have no idea what it is worth. It does have a dent on the side of the board by the nut, and a fret that needs polishing which I'll have looked after, or I can sell as is. PM me with recommendations, or discuss here, I'm good either way,

Geo seems to always be on the lookout for necks.

I have five bolt-on Epis. Never had that issue. I’d start with reinstalling the jack since messing with it before seemed to temporarily solve the issue.

I broke the hood ornament on my '94 Buick Estate Wagon once in the middle of winter, I had to hunt for one, they're different than the sedans. Ya gotta have a hood ornament.

th
Bonnet (sic) Ornaments hey?

I saw a couple of Buicks the other week. This is the ornament our ‘48s got. Which some of the early Holdens of similar timeframe got, although other designs (or none at all) were more frequent

Buick. Holden.

A ‘30s (guessing) Buick had this beaut
Bonnet Ornament. Love it!

I had guessed Mercury until I checked the badges.

I’d like a newer old car like below (but two tone), note by the 60s & early 70s Holden went to ‘bonnet spears’, my first car (a 69) had one and burned itself into my heart. This is the same series but a high line (Premier) and this one has a V8. Posher than mine.

The ground lead to the bridge is in place ans soldered properly to another ground?

Loved the 'subtle' "bullets" on the '55 grille.
