Well gosh. Funny you should ask. I have pretty strong opinions. If you can snag a Grexa reissue 360 stack, do it. The head is a preamp, so you also need the cabinet. Second is an original 360 stack. Next is a 320 head. It has the power section in it. It sounds best through a 406 or 408 cabinet. A 320 through a 408 cabinet is right there with a 360 stack. Then a 370. I am less thrilled with those. Through a 301 cabinet, they are good. I was surprised at how good my 370 sounded through some kind of Ampeg stack that I ran it through in a practice space. It didn't sound great through a 408 cabinet, so I sold it. All of 'em are loud.

So there you have it. All pure truth.

I realize a recorded sound is going to be pretty different from a live-through-an-amp-sound. How to you think they translated from recorded to in person sound? Same impressions for you recorded and live?

I liked VP neck/factory and CP neck/EBCF best but no surprise there.

I agree that this is how comparisons should be done.

Playing at the Troubadour tomorrow, probably won't be using a T-bird, but will be taking the Grecobacker with the Lollar T-bird pickup in the neck. Also gonna be the first test run of a new cab I just loaded up, an early Ampeg V4 cab with Basslite 2012s. Need a more portable cab to lug about than the 2000s, mostly for when I get back to touring, and an empty V4 popped up locally for $75, so I snagged it, stuffed it with foam and loaded the speakers I had. Testing with the Hiwatt DR103, it sounds really good. Not quite the high end content I'm used to with the JBL loaded cabs, but more than adequate, and it has big solid lows and strong mids.

I mean the 360 is the obvious choice, but the downfall would be the need for a separate power amp. I don't mind using the 300 power amp when I use it with a different cab, but no everyone wants to lug two pieces around. Next I would chose the 370 or 270, since both are a single unit. I also rather like the little 150 or 150b.

I may take that tomorrow, it was just easier to grab the Hiwatt for testing as it wasn't all rigged up at the time. I've used the Hiwatt cab into the 2000s the last few shows just to dial in a bit more grind that pairs so well with the Rick bridge pickup, but the 2000s is still my go to head 75% of the time. I also picked up an empty Fender Bassman 50 2x15 that I'm looking to load with JBL like speakers to run alongside the V4 for a more portable, but still full stack rig.Unfortunately all my D, K, and E140s are 8 ohm speakers, and I need to make the cab 8 ohm to pair with the V4, so I'm in the process of looking for alternatives.

Speaking of cabs I just might have grabbed an old (for it's kind) ABM115 for a dirt cheap price. Will stack nicely with the ABM410 and Hiwatt or 2xL2's.

Seriously. Great job Dave! Good diverse song selections. Great playing. It will be fun to see if you can add SIT Power Steels, maybe a set of NYXLs, Fender 7250s and a few others to the mix. I”ll plug into good speakers and give it a thoughtful listen.

Thanks. I appreciate the information. I know little to nothing about them. I'm thinking of just a head than can go with the cabs I currently have. Just in case one shows up in my world that's a very good price. I just don't know which are more loved and which are just amps like any other. One reason is that the 4th gear on my Genzler is said to get the ACC sound--which I'm liking though it's more overdriven. All just in case something crosses my path I should actually buy.
