Thunderbird Club

Sorry I've been slacking on this, work-stuffs interfering again :banghead:
So, just a bit more teaser-y, for now......

One of the things about most Ric basses (4000 series???) that has never appealed to me is the “designed by a mechanical engineering committee” look. To my eyes it’s klunky and awkward looking. But I can get over that if it plays and sounds nice.

I do like the looks of the Cheyenne model (where they offed a bunch of the bulky pieces) and I really like the look of the semi hollow body model (3000 series???).
Funny thing is that I think Rics are generally beautiful. A 4001 or 4003 has a delicacy to it that's unlike anything else I can think of.

I’ve actually only briefly played one Ric in a guitar shop probably 20 years ago. It sounded good, IIRC the neck felt incredibly thin (I was mostly playing five strings and precisions back then). But even back then the price seemed a bit high for something that I wasn’t sure I’d even like. A couple of times I’ve been tempted to spring for a nice used Ric, but even then they were more than I’d want to pay for something I’m not sure I’d bond with. The used Grecos are closer to the “test me” price point. If you see a nice clean one at a sweet price PM me, I might be persuaded to try one on for size.
Likewise, I tried one in hte store and could immediately feel that we wouldn;t get along. The neck is weird - thin and wide.

I have had two. I liked both, but not as much as Thunderbirds. They are good sitting on the couch noodling instruments. The main gripe I had with them is that they have one way they hang. Unlike a Thunderbird you can move around, they have one specific neck angle and that's pretty much what you get. I also find the sound much harder to dial in than a Thunderbird. It can be done, though. They can sound far angrier, but a little on the thin side.
