Thunderbird Club

Replace the grill cloth. Painting it isn’t worth the effort. And who knows how it will affect the dispersion. Duratex is a good idea, so long as you can strip the Tolex and glue. The stuff is tough as nails and easy to touch up after a few years.

Agreed on the Duratex.
Had a fridge myself that someone did that too.

I’ll admit I’m intrigued by these…

Not so much the EMG or Bartolini. Not interested in active.
I haven’t heard any Alternative Dimension equipped basses, so no idea how they sound. If you get a set be sure to fill us all in. I do have a set of the Barts I put in an Epiphone and they sound great. Im pretty sure the Barts are passive pups, but I did install them with a preamp so no idea how they sound in passive mode.

When I bought both of mine one had already been stripped and was an ugly weird color and the other only had half the Tolex left on it. I stripped the tolex off the one that still had some and painted them both flat black and I did take the corners off, can't tell the difference and the wood they used, marine plywood (IIRC) wears like iron. I paint them every once in a while, it's been years now though. They're both early 70's flat back cabs. I've slid these things up and down stairs before on their sides. This was all new grille cloth 25 years ago. I know I've posted these here before 400 times but I did it this time to share some information. :D

Same old ugly sun drenched picture. The heads have Tolex and the cabs don't.

It is. But I can find no record of one in a green color.
Looking at the finish in the chipped section of your bass, it appears as a green shade all the way through the paint. If it’s the exact same color under the guard it’s likely it was sprayed that way on day one for some reason. Who knows, you might have a very rare one, essentially a custom custom shop.

News from the Epiphone camp. The Vintage Pro will now be called the Thunderbird 64 and some really good new color choices are coming :) Sorry I can't tell you the colors but I already pre ordered one. I was really hoping for a Thunderbird II but I don't think that is going to happen.
Color choices? Hmmm...

I might go all Larry Graham with my original 360 stack. The tolex is pretty ratty, and I have white duratex. I also have five zillion other projects in front of that, so it may never happen.

What if I told you one color was Burgundy Mist Metallic? Not saying there's any truth to that, of course.
Already got one that color. Another will be Rallye Green eventually. It's probably cheaper just to buy one in a factory color if they have a color you like. But it will probably be the NR colors, which were pretty good, or red, which will also look pretty good. But not what I want exactly. Chucky can vouch for the fact that I have no taste.
