Do you prefer the later 70’s V2/V4 with the “distortion” knob vs the early ‘70’s one without?

Are they the same but the later ones can be said to have the “master volume mod” that people would do to the early versions.

A guy a grew up with was a fantastic banjo player. He would got to festivals and if he entered always was in the top 3 it seemed. Knew all kinds of pickers, and seemed like everyone who played banjo. Introduced me to Bill Monroe (may even be related), even went by Burch's house once with him. Played with Tom T. Hall for a bit. All that to say if ever there was a guy who could have made his living playing, he could have. Ended up working at Gibson doing banjo repairs, then Gruhn's a couple times. I never really understood why he didn't play for a living.

Much cheaper than a Gibson: Washburn.
I was never that good, just jammed with people on the base (Yokosuka Naval Base). That photo is from two blocks or so off base. The former enlisted club which was a ruin by that point in time. Then switched to guitar.

The inlays looked like 60s or so Gibson. Back then Washburn was in it's heyday for a lot of instruments. I played a few of their guitars and basses then and thought they were really nice.

I tried and never took to it. Too interested in bass at the time and not disciplined enough to practice.

Bill Sullivan used to make replicas of old Gibsons here in Louisville. Started in his basement and found a lot of players wanted those old Mastertones but without the crazy price those from the 20s and 30s brought, if you could find them. People all over wanted them once word got out. He eventually had a music store not far from our house, which was really nice. They did all the necks for Gibson for a while. One of his sons, took me in the back and on the wall there were replicas of maybe 40 or more(?) necks of all kinds with various inlays they/Gibson offered or used as models for repair necks. Unfortunately he passed away and then the induced housing bubble burst and they eventually closed the store. I believe they still did some work for Gibson.

I had a bit of 'Fro in '82.........
I think I weighed about 150 and was 6'1" by then, gotta love those wide leg pants too - I was busy scaring folks in Provo, UT.

I bought this neck fretted but decided I didn’t need the frets… just to be an environmental dick, I used Brazilian rosewood sapwood for the slot filler… (harvested way before the ban)

Cool, looks like lots of different wood options I wasn’t aware of, just assumed it had to be ebony.
I’ve only owned one fretless and I sold it a few years ago because I wasn’t bonding with the Pedulla ergonomics. Beautiful looking and sounding bass, but just couldn’t sit and play it comfortably. So off she went…

If we were professional enablers, we would pool our resources and buy it. They hold it somewhere until we can find him, so his magnificent quest can be completed.

Quicker than typing! Maybe not the best explanation, but it was the first. A couple things I might question is grilling doesn't have to be as quick as mentioned, and BBQ sauce is not necessary while cooking--or at all if done right. But if it is used while cooking, he's correct it's at the end of the long process.

pick a bass shape you like and are comfortable with, and if they don't make a fretless, make it a fretless...

I'm not a fan of playing coffee tables...
