Thunderbird Club

How so functionally? Admittedly I've never really delved into their controls due to lack of exposure or time, but I've never been able to gel with it and fortunately the FX loop allows me to use my own preamp and run straight into its power amp.

Personally, I like the MarkBass gear.
Has some great eq. Yes, they have their own voice, but not for everyone.
Based off the sound I know you like.
Probably not for you though.

But isn’t that what you gig with mostly? I’m sure it’s great sounding and lightweight, but I’d guess there are a huge selection of great sounding, powerful, lightweight and cool looking combos to choose from now. The GK Fusion is one that comes to mind.
lotsa good lightweight stuff out there…..thing is, like guitar amp manufacturers building bass amps to stay competitive, many trad bass amp manufacturers are jumping on the Class D bandwagon to stay competitive….Markbass’ original focus was lightweight, very efficient Class D bass amps from the get go and they continue to excel (over other manufacturers) in that arena, they fit my needs perfectly……

flat response to 20kHz, huge dynamic range, extremely low damping factor, high power (800W for the “Little Markbass model), 12lbs….perfectly executed, very tall order….the trick on the preamp, is not to be apprehensive about diming a control, you won’t “break” anything….

I had to make a cheat sheet for when I encounter Markbass amps at rehearsal spaces. I always forget what 2 of the controls do and the labels don't makes sense.
They do sound pretty good though.

exactly, you are talking about the VLE (vintage loudspeaker emulator) and the VPF (variable programmable[?]filter)…..trick is to set your EQ, and tone shape with those two after….don’t like Markbass “voicing”?…set both to 0…..my TBird settings…

I’m still dragging out a big heavy tube head and heavy (less heavy than before) cabinet or cabinets. While I still can. At least the AD200B and either or both OBC210 and OBC115, are more manageable than an SVT and 810e.

Also, since I don’t gig often, and I do own class d stuff, I’d bet if I did gig as often as some of you, the lightweight stuff would be used more frequently. And I’d probably end up with a GK fusion combo. (that seed that was planted a number of pages ago is starting to grow)

I only understood about a third of that, but cool. :D

simple, pretty much any attainable tone (flat response) from headphone levels to live levels (huge dynamic range), very fast transient response (low damping factor) catering to modern playing techniques (not slow like tube heads), high power, all in a very compact, lightweight package....

Yes, but, not being local we couldn’t bring bodies, also, both bands are originals, one is good ole hard rock, the other is much heavier but catchy vocally. I’m both cases any Friday, Saturday (best) night or Sunday afternoon gigs would be great, opening or 2nd of 3 bands is best!

If curious about the sound of each, I’d recommend looking us up and give a quick listen:

Hard Rock:

The song “So Easy” a fun one.

Heavy Rock:

The song “Circles” is a good one, and will have a video coming soon. Song “Idle Warship” is also good, both those have and others have the same lead vox, the drummer. Bleed, Faith, are done by lead guitarist, and Nostalgia Junkie is sung by the other guitarist. I stay away from microphones at this point.
I listen on Spotify when I’m in the mood for hard edged. Good bands.

Some readin' before sleep
That Hunter Davies book was the first real bio of the band. Pretty tame though re what really went on. I was pretty young, maybe twelve, when I got it for Christmas one year. It’s still at my parents’ house. I hope so anyway.

I never understood the anti-Markbass bias, particularly the looks. If your gonna play something as eye-catching as a Thunderbird, who's even going notice your rig?

I've been using Markbass since 2005 in my Rock bands, in my 8 year stint in a Classic Country band I did use a Little Mark with a ThunderChild 15, but as it was a red composite cab, not exactly a shrinking violet. In any case, I always brought the Markbass rig (CMD 210P + 210H) as a backup, and actually needed once when a cable failed and I finished the song on the backup.

I first noticed Markbass on Fremont Street in Las Vegas when I heard it before I saw it, what an in-your-face tone in that Metal Band, but of course is a versatile rig which can do it all. Speaking of which, I'm headed to Fremont Street in about 4 hours (only a 1 hour drive from Mesquite NV where we are now). So on Monday, I wonder how many pages I'll be behind....especially since we will be home on Monday, and head to the UTV Takeover in Sand Hollow UT for 5 days where this will get a workout (it's replacing the one I totaled in May)

How is that Kawasaki in snow?

Those pickups are installed into the Rex Bird, I know because they put a pair into mine that they'd not potted into the covers and they still have the labels. The shop eventually got an answer from Gibson saying those were the correct units but that they were supposed to be properly potted so at some point a new pair will turn up. I'm'a try n buy the loose pair and have them potted into a pair of gold covers like @TBird1958 suggested!!!
So, if you like Birds with those pups then they are still available but only in Black with Gold hardware. But they come with full Hipshot hardware. Which is great!
I had no idea the Rex used EB pickups, for some stupid reason I thought they were specially designed for the Rex with the help of Rex.

dunno…..this one makes that Acoustic rig (never a fan) sound ok…

Love it when a bass player gets in a zone and just flows with the music in perfect timing.

A thing showed today...

Our Queen, necking in bed again.

Funny thing is, throughout his career with the Who, John probably played that song live (and therefore maybe also recorded) on everything from Alembics to Gibsons to Fenders to Warwicks. They all sound great mostly because he’s the one playing the bass and he and his techs know how to EQ for best results. What would be very interesting is to find an isolated bass track for each bass he used for that song over the years - that would be way cool!

My son-in-law is making me hungry.

I gained three pounds just looking at that picture!

We don't ride in the snow or mud. It stays in Mesquite NV Nov-Feb, not much of either. It's mainly a rock crawler. They are the best straight from the dealer buggies. We were well taken care of by insurance, so could have bought anything, we elected for another Kawasaki. We ride with a lot of Razors, it's the rare trip when at least one of them doesnt break.
