Thunderbird Club

I hate it when a G string rides too close to the edge of a neck (especially a neck with a rounded edge) which then causes an occasional G string roll off the edge if not fretting just right.

CBS/Fender in the early '80s had a three-screw bent-plate bridge that originally was used on P's but later used on the American Standard J ['89-'94] affectionately (not by me) referred to as the "boner" J. I think when Fender employees reclaimed their company from CBS they had a big stock of them and as they were struggling to rebuild Fender they just used them wherever they could. The spacing was wider than a standard five-screw bridge and put the E & G string right at the fb edges. When I got my '94 A-S J, I was constantly rolling the strings off the fb so I replaced it with a Schaller 3D.

And as it is today after much modifying.

That'd be like trying to drive an entire Denny's, just don't try and go around a corner!

Actually as lambasted as it was then, in retrospect it's a rare vintage automobile and would be a fun road-trip (SF to Seattle?) car! :)

Having driven over the Siskyous twice, I'm not so sure I share your enthusiasm
It would consume vast quantities of gasoline though. :)

Buy it and I’ll ride up with you in it. Funny thing is, I thought they were kinda cool circa ‘72. I will never own another Ford as long as I live.

The ultimate road trip mobile… (other than a red Caddy convertible):

Similar to this monstrosity - a friend parents 'gifted' him their 70's T-bird that looked like this and I got a chance to ride in it. The hood was miles in front of the windscreen and the interior was cramped. '70s Detroit at it's finest. There's one in my neighborhood in the Mission. Fits right in.

Between the SITs and Dunlops I mentioned above, the Dunlops feel slightly smoother if that makes a difference to you. It doesn’t for me.

I don't think it'd make a difference to me. When i first strung my pbass with DR hi beam stainless, i found them "cold/hard" feeling, since i've been used to D'Adds forever. But after playing for a solid month with it only, they broke in nicely & don't feel so stiff. But still ring out bright given they're stainless.

SIT Power Steels are quite different from say DR, Roto or Ken Smith, they have a very prominent lo-mid/mid presence, which, with certain pickups really sound great.

Given you're advocating the new Gibson RI chrome bird pickups, any pros/cons with these strings/pickup combo if you've had a chance to test out?

I spent a college quarter in Cambridge, MA in ‘80 doing research and writing my senior thesis. I stayed in a boarding house in Somerville. I became a local at the bar around the corner. Beers were $.90. One of my buddies from the bar invited me to road trip up to Maine over a long weekend. He had a black one. We bought a couple cases in New Hampshire on the way up. Good Times. He was into Kiss and Nugent. It was a very loud ride. I fell in love with fresh lobster that weekend. Good times (from what I recall anyway).
