Thunderbird Club

FWIW(notalot), I've never even held a P Bass.
I honestly have nothing against P's(or J's, although I did play a J once-:meh:). I started my bass playing "career" with an EB-3(1967), went to the 67 NR next(~1973), and really didn't need anything else for ~35years. Then I added some others just for S&G. Some stayed, some didn't. Still need to get offa my dead arse and take the LPB2/5 to the shop for a fix I'm unable to perform. Maybe this week...:bag:

prolly not...

the

guys at the Ampeg club are really good about responding and have a wealth of knowledge. there’s also a 60’s Ampeg club and I’d be willing to bet there’s a B-15/18 club as well….heads up..

I agree - it's thee place to go for Ampeg info.

Reading "in the Pleasure Groove" Taylor mentions deliberately not using Fender basses as they were too much the "done thing" Through the '80s and more he used an Aria, Kubicki, Peavey and of late Dingwall. But as this photo shows he has an MM as well, but that BC Rich Eagle is a bit of a surprise. During Covid he did some great vids in which he broke down many of his bass parts for Duran Duran's hits, I really like him and his playing.

Interesting! This could explain it.

I get that - of the recording I've done the last for years I haven't used my '66 P even though it sounds wonderful. I will use it for our next session just because. :bassist:

It was the '80s - I think DD (and a lot of New Wave bands) just wanted to sound different from what had come before.

I’ve been experimenting with my G3: with neck + middle, tone about 50%, and volume somewhere below 70%, I can get a P-ish sound.

I can get close to a P-sound with two active basses and a P/J I own but the '66 P strung with old nickel rounds is dead on classic P sound.

I totally get that - loved his Kubicki Ex-Factor sound/tone. This one an awesome full scale fretless Factor (no capo)

He's a great player! I'm working on Hungry like the Wolf for a Code Delta Christmas gig. I'll look to see if he did a video on that.

I had contacted Gibson asking the following question:
“I purchased two of your “Vintage re-issue Thunderbird” pickups. I noticed that they only come as bridge position (lead) units.

Is there any way I can purchase one of the neck (rhythm) position vintage reissue pickups with chrome covers? I believe these would be what is found in the neck position of the current “non-reverse” Thunderbird basses.”

Response from Gibson:

“Thanks for reaching out. The Gibson Thunderbird Reissue Pickup offered through the Gibson Pickup Shop is meant to be used in any position. This would be the only vintage style Thunderbird pickup we offer for sale. Thanks again!”

So now we know.
At least you got a reply.
