We used to always have one in the basement at the other house. I found the newer ones with good specs and reviews last about 2 yrs now. I've bought several and that seems to be my pattern anyway. Like everything else, the old one's used more juice, but lasted forever. Takeaway might be to not waste much money on one since you may be buying another one in a couple years. Feel free to completely disregard.
Cool! We saw one here once. It was heading back to Kansas I suppose after an air show that's held every pre-Derby. Breathtaking is correct.

Interesting conversation today. A former drummer and sound guy comes up and asked about the bass I played last week and had on the stand today. Told him the story on the 1981 G&L L1k. He started telling how good it sounded and how much he liked it. He said "I think it sounds virtually as fantastic as your..." and I said, "Old Thunderbird." He said, "Yeah, it really does." I told him I was coming to the same conclusion. (The '64 is his favorite bass and can tell from other places in the building if I'm playing it.) He went on to mention things he was hearing and liking about it. He said there's something about how both of them sound that is really special.
I was thinking the same thing but was wondering if I just wasn't enjoying a new bass that really did sound good with no fiddling to get there. It was good to get some bass tone feedback from a discerning ear that helped confirm what I was hearing as well.
That said, these old G&L's suck, so don't start looking and buying them up. I think they are simply rebranded Hondos.

The new band was in the basement, and the Flamingo went through the 360. With the bright switch and a little eq but not much, it sounds great with Thunderbuckers and EBCFs. The '01 needs some setup work to compete. It's action is a bit high at the moment.
I have a 68 EBO. They do dive, but it's light and I don't notice.
