Thunderbird Club

Same boat a @Gaolee
2015 bird with La Bella blacks on DeCola pups
2013 EB5 with NYXLs on DeCola pups

I had XLs on the bird for a short period, the two basses sound different, same family but different with the bird being a bit darker and more mellow. The EB a tad brighter and a hair more aggressive and a bit louder as well. I think the coil tap is different in the two basses so that might be part of it. The EB has a more drastic difference in sound between tap on and off. EB pups are spaced virtually identical to the bird pups, so probably no difference attributed to that.
Based on my non-scientific listening over the years, that's what I think as well. But I haven't done a scientific experiment with the same setups, same pickup heights, and same strings. I was convinced that wood didn't matter that much until the EB and '15 came along. Now, I'm convinced it does, but less than strings and fingers.

I know the effects/sims are mostly geared for guitar. It wouldn’t take much for them to take some of what are in the Rumble Studio 25 practice amp and put them in what could be called a Rumble Micro. Once again, bass players getting the short end of the stick.
Line 6 Pod Go gives you every bass amp you ever need, including:
  • Ampeg B15n
  • Ampeg SVT
  • Ampeg Pro 4
  • Acoustic 360
  • Aguila Tone Hammer
  • Aguila DB51
  • Messa/Boogie 400
  • Gallien-Krueger GK800 RB
  • Sunn Collisium 300
  • Pierce B31
  • Requisite Y7 mic preamp
All amps have matching cabs and you can load your own impulse responses. If that isn’t enough for you… nothing ever will be.

I'm very happy with the '65 Deluxe amp setting. Maybe reserve judgement until you've tried one.
Oh, I like what I’ve seen and read about it. I just think it would be cool for them to do a bass specific one. There is a good vid of how to use it with an iPad that makes it look really simple using Garage Band. And I’m all for simplicity. Bluetooth streaming of Spotify to it to play along with looks awesome. I may just go ahead and get it. The price is right and I can offer my Vox Bass Amplug at a really nice price on here if someone might want it. I won’t be needing that anymore if I get the Fender Micro.

I have a 2015 Thunderbird and a 2013 EB with DeColas. One day, maybe I'll get around to setting them both up with the same strings to see what difference the ash/maple vs. mahogany construction makes. If you hold your breath waiting for me to do that, you will turn blue. So there's that.

I have two sets of Ken Smiths to put on the 2001 and Flamingo to see what differences there are between the 2001 pickups and Thunderbuckers on the Flamingo. Any bets on when that will ever happen? I have been too busy flogging the Flamingo with EBCFs and enjoying having flats on that bass. I'm doing a fair amount of stuff that requires long slides. Flats are a whole lot nicer for that purpose.
Roger that. Slides are what first drew me to flats.

Thank you. I’ll look into it. I use Line6 for wireless and they work well.

Ken brought it over during one of our get togethers.
I really like it.
Simple, fun. Easy to use.

Hmmm. Identical description. But $10k price discrepancy. Hmmm... I guess the $10k extra for the other one is a "mintest" tax.

That's strange? I see the same basses double posted a lot but the price usually matches?
Plus why is the pickguard all wonky? Looks like the screws are all sticking up and the top hole is cracked.

Well after seeing that I took it out of my cart...

It is pretty common for the PG to be broken, mine was.

There is something fishy going on with that one.

I played with a guitarist who had a Line 6 guitar with all the sounds. It was pretty amazing. For the purposes of a cover band that is trying to sound like the original, it was OK because it would more or less make all those sounds. It wasn't great, though. It was close enough for a noisy room, but it was clearly not the real thing if you knew what the real thing sounded like.

It makes me wonder how good an electronic keyboard can ever truly be as well. They are getting very good. A real piano is different. Same with electronic drums. I'm a crank. So there's that.

Those pickguards shrink a little over time. If it wasn't cracked like that, I would say it's a repro. It might be anyway, but the crack looks about right on that end. If the other end isn't cracked, too, well...

1964 Gibson Thunderbird II Bass | The Guitar Broker

I've actually seen a very few of these going for serious money. More than you might think. And this guy has been selling top-notch vintage instruments for a long time, often to people like Geddy Lee and others. Possibly holding out for Geddy to scrape up enough to put it on lay-away.:smug:

He's in Ft. Lauderdale, Mike ought to just head over and buy it!

Actually, I'm in touch with Guitar Broker about selling him my Les Paul 5er. Great bass, I just never play it.
