Thunderbird Club

POLL TIME:

Got a top secret project going on. Kind of a Thunderbird II on steroids kinda vibe (it's going to have two pickups). What pickups should I get?

1. Gibson Repros
2. Lollar
3. Novak
4. Seymour Duncan Custom Shop
5. Something else I'm missing
There are plenty of options. Check the list on the Wiki page. I’ll be doing a II project too. Haven’t quite decided what to try in it. Really, you can’t go wrong with any of them.

Marshall, I was pretty impressed with the bottom end on those LP humbucker equipped birds of yours. Can you point me to a link for those pups? All I can find are the ones with the six exposed pole pieces, don’t want that look on my four string bass.
I’ve never seen them offered anywhere with the solid cover. But they are great pickups.

I’m doing a 64 IV project and went with Seymour Duncan.

Ok, new toys. The EB is obviously a short scale. The case is original as far as I can tell. It is going to take a lot of setup work. The strings are a mile high.

The Kawai is long scale and I’d swear it came from the same factory as my National. It has black tapes with red silks. Any ideas on the brand? Setup is reasonable. The case is a Vox and definitely not original.

haven’t gone by Dr. in years Marsh…
My grandfather was a Mr. and my grandmother could be (I’m told) a bit particular about it if someone addressed him as Dr.

Explain: he was a medical doctor. But in the British system (which we used) surgeons were Mr. To recognise their extra (superior?) education and training. They were a Master of Surgery - therefore Mr. You don’t really see it now, except on those Brit TV horrible diseases shows.

Research? I ain't doing any of that. I learned better than that in here. I might even hit up @Dadagoboi to see if he has any more silver things hanging around that might be fun in my little project.

As for what it is, it's nowehere near a TBird, but using the pickups might sorta kinda maybe a little bit in a round a bout kinda way resemble a II tonally sorta maybe. I did talk about it and other things like it a few pages ago though. That's actually what made me think about it.

I didn't know you worked for Cirrus Logic. I talked to many of their FAE's and sales Reps several years ago.
My band from way back was called Cirrus as you see in my avatar!
I went looking to see if it was related, or a band or studio or what, the day you showed up here!

I have five Limited Edition Custom Shop EPI bolt on IV’s. They are excellent Thunderbirds. My Silverburst, TV Silver, and white ones have the Epi Les Paul guitar humbuckers. They are wonderful, full range pickups with a great bottom end. My Pelham Blue and red ones have beautiful metal flake finishes. They have the standard EPI pickups that are fine. All except the TV Silver one have 1.73 nuts. The TVS is a 1.5. The fretwork on all of them is first rate. Highly recommended.
I thought you had six.

Dad had a PhD. I never really got protocol as s teen, so when my friends called him Mr O’Neal, I’d correct them to Doctor and he’d correct me to Mister. I was used to being around him as Floyd or Dr O’Neal, never Mr O’Neal.

I gave the daughter-in-law a washboard and thimbles for Christmas or her birthday one year. She's a starchy classical oboe player, and I figured she just needed to let her inner hillbilly out to loosen up a bit. She got into it a lot and gave me a washtub, broomstick, and ball of twine the next year. I figure the boy can play a jug and we are all set.
OK, I've played in orchestras with strings, clarinets, flutes, and the double reeds for years, but howinnahell do you starch an oboe?

New bass day…

A few years ago I sold my only fretless bass (Pedulla Pentabuzz). Great bass but five strings made it less comfortable. So now I have this thing and it plays wonderfully and looks pretty cool too (at least to me). I am considering dropping a Tbird pup in place of the stock pup someday, but for now I’m really enjoying it.

That's beautiful- thank you for sharing! Btw, what make is that? It reminds of the bass in this video of a relatively unknown ska-tinged song by the Fine Young Cannibals-

I'm really liking the SD Custom shops now that I've got the rest of the wiring sorted out, played it and the Cataldo at rehearsal last night. If $$$ are important though, the Gibsons are a really good choice - bass will sound like a current Non Reverse, not a bad thing at all.
