When dealing with a singer in a band, one needs to be flexible as far as "original key" of any song. For me, it's happened numerous times that once a song's bass-line was learned/internalized, it needs to be altered to another key. As pointed out - patterns on a bass are generally transferable but it still takes de-programing what was initially learned, especially related to incorporating open string notes.

Me too - especially because the basses I play and what I want to hear is a mid-centric bass sound/tone. I let the amp/cab do the low-end and articulate the mid-range with the bass. I've tried playing low-end/dark sounding basses at rehearsal and it throws my favored sound off.

If you never have to transpose or transposing just happens for you, it’s probably just extra work. But once you learn it, you never have to transpose again when the key changes.

Then again, I learned trombone playing intervals, and guitar with chords, so the concept involved comes naturally to me.

Using a Hipshot Drop-D machine on the E tuner takes getting used to. (I have it on a couple basses) TSC plays Heroes by Bowie and we begin it in D with a drone & octaves. (there's a few versions out there - we chose a re-mix version that starts more spacey/ambient) If I use a bass w/o the Drop D - I de-tune and transpose. It just takes a bit of concentration to over-ride muscle memory.

I've been having to deal with a lot of key changing latley to accommodate singers, I bought the digi-tech drop pedal to make things easier. Totally worth it, I can stay in standard tunning and with a turn of a knob be where I need to be.
