I think I'm going to keep the headstock red, sorry... I was a bit disturbed by the fact that the pickguard and the truss rod cover aren't the same colour but... it's kind of an aquired taste, finally I like it as it is right now.

I'm waiting for Rotosound flats, I don't like rounds.

Try Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats-if you can get them.

Hey gang.

I recently jumped into the Thunderbird world. I believe this one is an Epiphone Classic pro. It's neck through, and has Gibson pickups. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

I've always loved the look of the Thunderbird, but the only ones I've tried previously have been the base model epi's, and I didn't really get along with them. I didn't really like the sound, and the neck dive.

I came across this one for sale a while back and the price was so good, I felt compelled to buy it.

Once I played it, I was really impressed. Its got almost no neck dive, and the sound is great.

I've had it for a bit, and brought it to rehearsal yesterday, and had a lot of fun playing it. I put on my chorus pedal with some subtle settings, and it really sang with it.

My only complaint is the output isn't as loud as my other basses. I have a couple of Stingrays, a P-bass, Jazz, Ric 4003, Ibanez BTB.

My question to you is, I've done a series/parallel mod to a Jazz bass before, and it significantly increased output. Would that be possible with this Thunderbird? Has anyone done it? I guess the option of replacing the pickups is there, but I like the tone itself already, just want more output.

One thing to try - if you have everything set to 10 vol vol tone, reduce one of the vols to 8 or 9. Both vols at 10 causes an effect of slightly reducing the volume.

That's sort of what I do with my Ric 4003. I have everything full, and just reduce the neck pickup slightly, and there seems to be that sweet spot. I'll try that with this T-bird.

Ultimately, it's not a big deal. I'll just turn up the amp a bit if need be. I like the tone of the bass, do I'm not looking to alter that. I'll also adjust pickup height as was suggested as well.

Congratulations! As mentioned above, raising pickups is the first thing to try. The Tbird+ pickups are great. I’m mostly a stainless rounds guy. I find SIT Power Steels to be the perfect match for my Thunderbirds with those pickups (thanks to @BklynKen who turned some of us on to them some years back).

Definitely not as warm as mahogany, but probably closer to an all maple neck. Very even response across the entire neck.

Yes, try that first. The TB+ pickups love to be very close to the strings. I find the tone underwhelming when they're too low. Raising them close to the strings can make all the difference in the world.

Took both Birds out for a flight at Loon Mountain Friday afternoon. New band with two hotshot twenty something guitarists. Both got equal playing time. BL was raving about the Non Reverse and asked me which one I would keep if I could only keep one. I struggled to answer, but as both are currently configured I’d lean toward the NR as it has a fuller sound. Te Reverse is darker and they complement each other well. I may look into changing the Reverse pups.

Looks interesting, never tried one. Since it requires a battery and will in essence convert your bass from passive to active, what would be the advantage of this over a simple two band preamp. Cost? Available space in the control cavity?

Looks interesting, never tried one. Since it requires a battery and will in essence convert your bass from passive to active, what would be the advantage of this over a simple two band preamp. Cost? Available space in the control cavity?

I haven't really investigated preamps, but with the buffer, you would retain the passive tone controls. And I like the idea of being able to add in the bridge pickup without the interaction.
