Thunderbird Club

Watched a Thomann YT video last night and they demoed about 8-10 strings. Well done. One set that shocked me was Exilir. One of the few strings I've never tried or even been interested in. ON the TV Sony sound system they sounded impressive. Good mids and very full. All were played on a Jazz. Anyone ever try them?

I have a set on my Alembic Dragon Wing bass and they do sound great. Love the feel of them as well. IIRC mine are light gauge and really make playing that bass effortless. Note - I only play finger style, not sure how they'd sound or feel or hold up with a pic.

Thanks. I knew a guy who used them on his acoustic, but I don't think I ever played (poorly) his guitar. Interesting enough I might have to try some before long to satisfy my curiosity. Kind of pricey if the don't sound good. Good being subjective. I know many seem to like them because of their longevity. As long as they retain their mids and lows don't sound flubby, I don't care if they maintain their brightness. Shoot, even my Rotos don't sound like most would think for SS 66s--meaning bright, clanky or whatever term one chooses. I like them on some things because they are punchy and havve good lows, not becuse they are bright.

Thanks. The only coated string I tried was DR Dragon Skins. Came with a bass. Sounded pretty good as I recall and I'm not sure I would have known they were coated. I don't really recall an odd feeling.
Black Beauties sound like they're similar. They don't feel as if their coated in Saran wrap.

Adding a detail to my Bach. The 60’s NRs have this angle at the tip of the headstock.
Do the NR reissues have it?
It’s there on my 75 Marauder.

I would much rather hear what she thinks.

Cool video. I especially appreciate the consistent playing without the showing off so prevalent in many videos.

Good video from a string design and background info standpoint. However, Listening on my iPad I could tell absolutely no difference from string to string. Partially because of the limitations in iPad size speakers but more importantly because of the chatter by the host between every sound sample.

I don’t know what the normal audio recollection period is when you’re dealing with nuance differences, but having to listen to someone talk for 45 seconds between sound samples and then being faced with three different sound samples in a row makes it very hard for me to recall what I heard and compare one string to another.

Would have liked it better if the host gave the verbal rundown on each string up front, then let the bass player (she was an excellent player btw, very consistent in her playing and a good range of styles played) have at it with each of the strings played back to back on just one style (finger), then again all back to back in another style (slap), then again all back to back in the third playing style (pick).

While I would have liked that, I could hear clear differences on my iphone, more so if I held it near my ear. Obviously good speakers or phones would be best. How old is your ipad?

Seattle is spectacular today as well, we should have about a week of really nice weather - finally spring.

Once a year The Museum of Flight turns into a very cool dance club - about 1500 folks last night, we had a fun time!
