didn't know that....thought they were favored in PTO because of their twin engine redundancy.....if I recall, Bong was very successful in one of those but can't recall the theater....
Didn't know why they seemed to be more in service in PTO. Interesting.
The ETO was predominantly high altitude bomber escort duty and the P-38 wasn't really up to the task of dogfighting with the 109's and 190s. Serious issues with the heaters and losing control in high speed dives, the 8th phased them out with Thunderbolts and of course, Mustangs. The PTO was much more a low altitude area for the operations they were assigned to, and it was very successful - including shooting down Yamamoto.
