Thunderbird Club

Oh. My. God. That guy is an artist.

That’s the tone!!!
I got around to watching it. Not at all what I was expecting, but makes sense. Maybe not for all situations. But he's well thought out. Likely easier and less risky than splines. But possibly not ideal for a bass with 160lbs or more on the neck. But possibly so. If it holds--it worked.

I think the Octamizer may have to go back. It just doesn’t track right, farting up and back down (very quickly) every second or third note. I’ve played with the controls a good bit, watched the Aguilar videos, etc. Sad face. I guess the birds just didn’t choose it.

The XVive, however — assuming it works as well live as it does in the house, will stay and I’ll get a second one at some point.
It wouldn't meet your criterion of top jacks, but the Ashdown has no tracking issues. And sounds as normal as you can ever hope for. I assume the pedal is equally as good.

Anyone recognize what strings are on this Thunderbird? Look like rotosounds or bass boomers? Love the tone. Sound like steels but not sure.

Looks like might be flats of some kind not rounds when I stop the vid. The silks looks like La Bella Low Tensions. But the bright sound throws me. But could be new strings and no telling what his settings are. Maybe some kind of pressurewound.

I use a T-Rex Quint machine and it tracks great. It also does not have trouble tracking chords.

I recently got one of these used & yeah it tracks great! the fifth is pretty unique & interesting, i've not found a use for it as of right now, but i'm sure when my band & I write more songs, it'll come in hand.

If you have a 64 Thunderbird, could you post a photo of how the nut sits in its slot — from one end of the nut? Thanks!

Oh, look...FedMess tossing a delivery on the ground while saying it was left on the porch again while gone.

I use it almost like a preamp. Always on and all settings on low. Does a great job adding depth to your sound.

I may give EH a try again. I loved their guitar pedals, but two of the first bass pedals I bought (new) were EH Just out of the warranty periods, each started randomly squealing. The feedback was clearly internal, because no matter what I used them with, it would randomly happen.
I've had this one on my board for years. It use it to emulate the 8 string on "I want you to want me", octave up only where I want to sound like a guitar, and octave down to get a lower D. It will track the D on the 10th fret of the E string.

IMO it works for him because he has the lathe and makes those pieces to fit.
I'll stick with splines and hide glue or tight bond. My upright headstock is still holding together after a couple of years.

Don't TI flats have red silks?

It looks like there's a separate mahogany plate on the headstock face. That creates one side of the nut slot and the other side is the fingerboard. I've never noticed that detail.
Yes, the raised black area on the top of the headstock is a separate piece of mahogany as opposed to the edge being routed.
